Today I installed the latest Direct X onto my PC (DirectX February04th) and when I click command prompt and type dxdiag it says that my DirectX version is DirectX10. Can anyone explain why it says this? is it a mistake or is the latest DirectX that got released today actually DirectX10? My PC is running on Vista Home Premium 32bit edition and my graphics card is a Geforce 8800GTS

    DX10 comes with Vista

There are two versions of Direct-X that come with Vista.

As Peetee pointed out it comes with the latest version 10 but also comes with Direct-X 9.Ex which is a special build of DX9 for Vista.

9.Ex emulates all older versions of Direct-X {pre v.9} to maintain compatibility and it is also what drives the user interface of Vista.

If a game insists on installing Direct-X 9.0c or earlier you can do so but nothing will happen as the OS knows it is an older version not designed for the OS & simply ignores it.

But does this also update the DirectX found on Vista Home Premium?

    Not sure what you mean..

All versions of Vista come embedded with Direct-X 10 and Direct-X 9.Ex

DX10 is entirely separate from DX9, as DX9 is for backwards compatibility and DX10 is for the future so it makes a clean break from the DX9 API.
