Forum suggestion

IMHO I think this forum needs a couple of stickies. As a MA noob I've been coming here lookin for info and it's not always easy to find. I've seen several threads along the lines of "Where's the nearest martial arts club in my area". Surely a stickie where people could post links to their club website would be beneficial to all. Also, links to more general resources, online stores etc. would be useful.

    Anyway, just a suggestion.

I think the moderators took the approach that instead of having stickies with old defunct info in it, the onus is on the individual to start a new thread with their request.

I wouldn't mind but he has a club:)

personally I think the forum should be sub divided into styles/systems like http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/ that way people can deal with each individual style.

That's a valid concern I suppose, but it seems to work pretty well on other boards. IMO a centralised information resource can only be a good thing.
    'search'
The search is crap. And depending on your browser may not work at all.

Don't worry Barry, I'm not looking for somewhere to defect to :) Just wanted to put forward my perspective as a newcomer to teh board.

I second that. I don't really care when someone posts a new thread about something that came up a while ago, you'd swear it was increasing global warming or something:eek: ;)

It would be good if the also made a sub forum specially for MMA

    muckwarrior,

Thanks for your suggestions. A forum is for live, disposable content. As such stickies just clutter up space with inaccurate/incomplete info that requires updating and pushes new posts below the fold.

Sub forums will not happen either. You're lucky there's even a SD/MA forum on boards at all. Besides what would happen is people would still sh!t stir on forums other than their art.

Once again, thank you for your query

HAHAHAHA. I agree. The computers forum is full of repeated threads. Never bothered me. Some of the other mods go mental over it. I suppose it's a personal thing.

On the search front; You can use google to search boards.ie. In the search field in google.ie type:

    site:www.boards.ie <insert your search here>

    for example....

    site:www.boards.ie mma on the southside

    brings up pretty relevant results.

    HTH.

That's a dumb idea. There isn't enough traffic through this forum to warrant it. If it was divided into sub forums, you'd have about 1 post per day in each sub forum, which would kill it totally.

Thats a dumb reply. The reason there isn't enough traffic is because its structured the way it is.

The old IRMAC forum we subdivided like that.

Just a pity there's not an active Irish vBulletin board run along the same lines.

    Hi Jon

I think that would be a brilliant ideal, maybe some of the smaller styles in this country could be link together with other like minded styles. Maybe South east asian styles like kali link with silat for example. The forum design this way would bring more people to the forum, as they could communicate with other people doing the same style, without it being hijack. That way maybe more diverse and interesting threads can develop if people feel more comfortable.

The moderator could than make sure no one would abuse the threads and everyone would benefit.

someone has just quite possibly kata'd the correct. Even silat liams suggestion seems sensible to me atm, which may be an indication of inebriation on my part

In other news: anyone who comes up with the line "You're lucky there's even a SD/MA forum on boards at all" and awards themselves the title of people's mod in the same post, even in an ironic manner, should hang their heads in shame or some other embarrassment related emotion

...You're lucky there's even a SD/MA forum on boards at all...

No we're not. Considering there's a mustard forum, a sweets forum etc., a martial arts forum is nothing spectacular.

You'd be surprised - and Colm is the man who would be in the know.

When I post in response, along with Khannie (another moderator who filled in for me while I was away), that should be the end of it.

By the way, on my forum, calling me stupid is a bannable offence. I'm off to ban some people now. And Clive is correct, we are lucky there's still a SD/MA forum on this board. As a mod I'm privy to more goings on than regular users.

And before I go: I am the people's mod, as I was voted into this position.

    Colm
