Hope someone here knows the solution to my problem.

I regularly have to dump about 10GB-13GB of raws from my collection of CF Cards which takes forever over the about 13 minutes per gig.

Has anyone come up with a solution so speed this up?

Cards are all Sandisk CF ExIII 20MB/s RW and using an array of USB2.0 card readers Delkin and Agfa.

A gig takes me a couple of minutes ,you've not got antivirus software checking the files as they come in ??
Have you tried copying and pasting files yourself ,without using a program.

13 mins for a gig is only just over a 1MB/s. As it is most like not the card or the readers (especially as you have tried several) it can only be the USB port or the PC itself. Have you tried plugging the card reader in to a different usb port? How are you copying the files from the card? Are you using a program to do it or just using windows explorer?

As a general rule i dont have antivurus apps on mt editing machine and I always cut/paste the files.
Ok a bit of a break down of speeds

    max speeds
    Card's read = 200Mbit/s
    USB2.0 Read = 480Mbit/s
    hard sisk Write = 3000Mbit/s

So from the above I should be able to dump 1GB of raws to my machine at a theretical speed of 200Mbit per second should be around 25MB per second but at the moment I get around 11MB Per second.

I know USB2.0 never runs at it's max speed due to resource sharing on the internal system IO bus but come on it has up to 480Mbit/s to fill which should do the trick.

    1 megabyte = 8 megabit

I don't know if you are using windows ,but sometimes drivers need to be installed for certain card readers.
Also your usb bus might need a driver aswell ,
Your manufacturer would have updates ,maybe for the bus ??

I don't work in IT by the way ,this is just purely from my own experience.

You definetly will get better speeds ,try using firewire instead and see what happens if you can .

Oh wait a sec may have something wrong here.
It was 36 minutes to dump a 4 GB CF ExIII card to a SATA disk 10krpm

Maybe the architecture of the III card is not compatible with the reader ,check sandisk.

Card reader was installed under windows and uses the windows default storage driver to access as Delkin do not supply a customized driver . As for the drivers for the USB2.0 bus they use the intel OCHI5 drivers and are the latest from intel.

Was out looking for a IEEE 1394 system but nowhere seems to stock them any more I know these are faster as with the diffrent way they access memory. Own the Espon PCMCIA interface too which is faster but only on my laptop.

Definitely sounds like a USB 1.0 port rather than a USB 2.0 port. I can't imagine what else it could be. If it is a new computer make sure "Legacy USB" is disabled in the BIOS.

Thanks Valentia going to run a benchmark app on the machine when I get home and see if there is any change.

Are you sure the cards are geniue Sandisk? Fake cards are a big problem, very common on ebay, they look ok but are generally much slower.

Hopefully this is not the case but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Well unless Amazon and Conns are selling fakes I think I can forget about this problem but will check anyway.
