CDRW Not working

    Hi there,
I went to burn something onto CD yesterday and discovered my HP 9150i CDRW wasn't working. I'm haven't used it for months. Prior to this it worked perfectly.

When I go to burn a CD it says "Device is not Ready" even though it says it is properly installed. I emailed HP but they weren't able to help. A few months ago I upgraded from Me to Xp but then uninstalled it cause I wasn't happy with it. Could this be something to do with it? I uninstalled and reinstalled the software but no joy I also checked the connections but that didn't solve it.

Any advice would be gratefully received. Also how do you know if it is physically broken.

    cheers gs

Will it read other types of CDs?

What software are you using to burn?

Also did you say you reverted to ME after XP?

No, just put an audio CD in and it wasn't picked up.

Also I forgot to say that I turned off the DMA in the settings as suggested by HP troubleshooting but no joy.

Using Hp MyCD software that came with it. Also Adaptec DirectCD Wizard.

My computer had Windows ME, then I upgraded to XP, but it messed up a few things so I uninstalled it and went back to ME. The CDRW wasn't listed as one of the components that XP was incompatible with, and the other components, eg DVD drive worked fine when I went back to ME.

Its not after installing as a standard ROM drive, rather than a R\RW drive, is it?

No I don't think it installed as an ordinary CD ROM as its not even picking up oridinary CD's, also I still had the original HP CDRW software, that I was able to reinstall it with so that shouldn't have been a problem.

Does a CDRW use the same laser to read and write or are they separate? It doesn't do either but if they were the same laser it would be more likely that its broke, whereas if there's 2 lasers and they're both not working it would make me think it could be software related. Only an idea!!!!
