Just got my first imac today so forgive my stupidity!

After much difficulty i connected to my netgear router (only difficult cos i couldnt remember the security key and had to reset it) but everytime i restart the mac i have to setup a new profile before i can reconnect. (it asks me for a password for the existing connection which doesnt match the security password for some reason, hence why i have to setup a new connection)

how do i make the mac 'remember' the settings?

Usually all you need to do is check the little box below the password field when you join the network. Have you done that? If you have and it's saved with the wrong password, I think what you do is go into Preferences -> Network -> Airport. There you can double click on a saved network to change its settings. At least I think that's how you do it, since this never happened to me.

There are a few postings on this on the apple support fora at www.apple.com/support which might throw some light .

I had that issue as well and ultimately it was a matter of trial and error but involved thrashing system preferences - the fora have a more detailed reply.

Also if possible whilst you are connected get your software updates as the recent airport update resolved a lot of the quirky/annoying airport problems that were being reported.

In System Preferences open up the Network menu. In this select your Airport by double-clicking on it. This will bring you to a group of settings with different tabs. In the Airport tab, there's a drop down menu called 'By default, join:'. In this select 'Preferred Networks'. Now you need to add your network to the preffered list by clicking the + button, entering the name and the security key. Then click Apply Now

Hope this helps, was a big problem for me initially too :)
