Dead hard drive

I've got a 160Gb hard drive that started giving me read problems and less then 2 days later seemed to be 100% dead. Windows and my bios will detect it and assign it a drive letter but when I try to view the contents, it asks me if I'd like to format it or not.

    So do I:

    a) Quick format it and use a file recovery program to grab the files I need (they won't have been wiped during the transfer)

    b) Figure out a way so that Windows sees the present file structure (using a HDD recovery program that boots from start-up into DOS and works on the drive outside of Windows)

Any replies will be welcome !

File system is wrecked I think. Is it showing up under Disk Management (Start->Run->diskmgmt.msc)?

Yes, but it doesn't pick up what file system it is (NTFS).

I'm pretty sure that I can't recreate the file system though...
