Hook Head C&C

Was bored with some photos from the weekend. The weather wasn't great, and all in all pretty boring photos of Hook Head, so I went to see what I could do in Photoshop.

They might seem a bit blotchy on some moniters I've viewed them on, but they should be alright...... :)

The 2 in colour have plans to be printed for lightboxes, so bear in mind that with the darkness...

I like number one a lot. Looks like someone tipped a pot in Indian ink into the sky!

Done really well with these, am a big fan of cloud effects. Great work.

All very primordial looking, like when dinosaurs ruled the world. Quite fitting since the area is rich in such fossils.
On the large 'On Black' version on the first one it looks very obvious where the purple was added to the sky, perhaps a bit of straight burning instead of colouration would be more affective?

Actually, the colour was already there! Wasn't added at all - I'm thinking of reducing some of the saturation in the sky of that one though.

Purple sky? Hmmmm, it's the Hook head Jim, but not as we know it.

Well, the purple tones in the sky were there...I just exagurated them with some blends! :D

I prefer the first one with the less colour in the sky. Looks fantastic on black.

I love the effects you've created. As a photoshop newbie (I have elements 5) could you tell me how you achieved them, if you don't mind me asking!
    Thanks!

I think they are excellent and the full resolution view against a black background suits them perfectly. I love the detail and sharpness of the rock areas and the dramatic sky adds to them a lot too. I think the orange line at the horizon in the 2nd one looks spot on. My favourite ones would be the 2nd and 3rd - the only part of them I would change would be to tone down the purple tint in the top left of the first one. The processing is very interesting but it wouldn't have worked without solid compositions behind it. All in all I think they are bloody good.

the first one is my favourite, well done. I love the sky. Do you have the original of this anywhere. I'd love to see the before and after and any tips on how you'd get this effect in photoshop would be apprecited too.

Nice work alright, I was a bit concerned about the darkness in the images, but they do need to be viewed against black.

The purple/magenta splodge in the first does look a bit artificial, so I'd also go for toning that down a bit.

Looking at the second one, I like it as is but I think a 6x12 crop could work really well too.

    Good work Al

    Thanks all.

I'll tone down the purple in the first one so! :)

    Thanks!

It was my first time going this far, and it was kinda a very 'will this work?' effort, but I'll post up some befores and afters, and half way there's in a bit.

It's all pretty much down to dodging, burning, erasing and blending methods :)

Heh...you wouldn't recognise the originals though...

I think the work is fabulous Al but I find them depressing :(

They feel like a Chernobyl or holocaust world. A world full of radiation and pollution. They are really well created and, I think, could be used in some way by an environmental organisation or magazingn

Oh I would :) I was there a couple of weeks ago on a couple of occasions and the first time, it was greyer 'n a really grey thing, just like your shot above. It was during the time of the really high winds and I fired off about 3 rolls trying to catch the massive breakers. Next occasion was the next morning and it was just beautiful, sun was out for a while and everything had much more definition and colour.

Expended another 3 rolls... Is it any wonder I'm going digital...

I intend scanning the better frames and "doing something" with them in PS. You've given me a few ideas with those above, cheers. ;)

Lol, yeah, it can be a wee bit boring without the high winds or fantastic weather.

There was a chap at Peoples Photography this year that took panoramics that were 4 x 120 frames wide of the light house at night during a storm...that was pretty much my inspiration!

I'll give some techniques on feicing around with them like that when I get a bit more confident in it!

These are a lot less 'plastic' (overly perfect maybe) than those panos - I can't describe it really, just more of a raw feeling, of being closer to the earth, or something.

I don't mind the purple so much, but the patchiness is slightly distracting, although it may not show in the lightbox print. Would love to see them on a wall, BIG.... :D
