Wii downloads updates in the background from WiiConnect24 while the console is idle. When you have it off, it still downloads updates for itself. Whenever the blue light comes on, you have an update or something that needs your attention.

I'm sure you can turn off the updates or plug it out when not in use but if you want the updates, you have to download them.

Could be someone leeching off your broadband if your network isn't protected using WPA.

    The wifi has 128bit
I'm using a ripwave modem and the speed is crap at the best of times.

    thanks

The Wii doesn't use up much bandwidth when it's in standby mode, as it doesn't really download anything, it checks if there are any messages waiting for you though, which get downloaded when you turn the Wii on. If the blue light shows, that means theres a message waiting. But you'll notice when you turn it on and go into the message board part, the message can take a while to appear. And the downloads do not happen automatically, you have to check for updates.
