Journalism-Possible carear change

I've been freelancing for a few years and I'm looking for some advice regarding my future.
Basically, I've become a bit fed up with freelancing, and all the hassle that goes with it.
My dilemma is Its the only job I've ever wanted do since I was a nipper, but at the same time I'm having no joy getting the sort of job I really want to get.
I've more than served my apprenticeship in this game and I'm questioning just how good I really am at it.
I work in Dublin but even with all the papers it aint easy, it seems to be a case of who you know/there's a lot of nepotism...Is that just Ireland in general?!
Anyone ever ask the same sort of questions of themselves when things haven't gone to plan in their carear?
My friends, family are telling me to stick at it, but I am trying to be practical looking at my finances etc.
So my question is, with a media qualification what am I actually qualified to do?!
From what I can make it out, My qualification is not something I can really travel with, and to be honest I'm starting to wonder is this really the business for me.
Maybe I ain't as good as I think.
How does one decide what other carear path to take once I've decided that my current one isn't going to plan?
I'm thinking along the lines of teaching or the guards, yes I know completely unrelated to what I'm doing but hey..
Anyways, this has been a bit of ramble, but any advice appreciated.
To those of you who packed in your jobs and made a change..why did you decide to do so?
Any what are the factors to consider?
I'm realtively young, no kids but nasty mortgage!
Hope I haven't depressed too many people:)

I know a few people who have switched, most successfully. That said part of being good at something is sticking with it, through good and bad. Its one of those things you have to make a judgement call, and not look back. Why not take a career break, do something else for say 2 yrs, then come back to it.

Yes...especially in the media, and doubly-so in the print-media. The national broadsheets are the worst.

You may be going about your career arse-about-face, normally you work as a staff writer for 10 years and go freelance.

I'd consider going to the UK if I was in your shoes and I'd try and get on the staff of one of the biggies. Compile a list of the subs and write to them.
