Hi all. Some advice and feedback on some shots would be appreciated. It was my first shoot in (mostly) black and white, and my first real attempt at composition. I've tried to frame everything in the viewfinder, so I haven't cropped anything - all as is from the camera shop and not photoshopped. I can see where crops are needed but would appreciate your input, to see if I'm on the right track.

Also my first go with the macro :)

Set is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/sineadw/sets/72157594508517439/ (I think?)

I was disappointed on the whole to be honest, but from the total sets there *may* be some stuff put on a CD inner sleeve. Its a psychobilly band, so think rockabilly with an edge. Anyone got any suggestions to how I can put a bit of a vintage spin on them?

Should try a mix of colour and Sepia too

My fave is the Mic, bit of a cliché but nicely done :)

I think they are all pretty good in terms of composition/framing and processing wise. Were they b/w film scanned in or shot in digital ?

The major criticism from going through the fleckr is that some of them are too similair (ie 38140013, 38140012, 38140011).

If you are looking for a more vintage-ey type of look its hard to say as theres lots of ways to interpret that but there are rakes of photoshop actions on the web for achieving different kinds of vintage, whether its actions, brushes and so on - you might want to have a look here

or even google 'photoshop create vintage look'

Thanks :) The similar photos - they're from the main sets and not the 'fave' one? I stuck everything up there. The band are going through everything and I wasn't sure what to cut or not from their point of view. I did a lot of bracketting because I wasn't sure of the light. They're all shot on film so I was trying to make sure I got *something*.

    Sepia.. hmmm...

    And thanks Julie ;)

Heh, np at all... some crackers up there I thought. Why didn't bw film look like that when I tried it? Gah!

I actually got a definite fifties feel from them as is. Obviously the style of the instruments themselves puts that across to a certain extent, but it was rather more classic than psychobilly ;) Must have a think about how to distort them in wonderful ways...

Superb Sinead. I especially love the Jazz bodied guitar with the Bigsby, I have such a soft spot for those.

I might try a little gaussian blur maybe? Esp with the guitar ones. I'm not crazy about those ones at all.

The guitar, its beautiful isn't it? I really didn't do it justice. I had the owner giving out to me yesterday that I hadn't cleaned it before I shot it  I wanted to photograph his amp, 1964 Fender Bandmaster I've seen grown men cry over. He wouldn't let me near it.

    Thanks again :)

Those images need a lot of work for be psychobilly.
38130006 is by far the best and IMO the only one thats recoverable.

    I'll try to explain.
Ok first of all it's for a psychobilly group right and if psychobilly is a mix between punk rock of the 1970s and the rockabilly of the 1950s then clean black and white images no matter how good dose not fit the bill.

You need to get some color in there and spice it up. if your not prepared to inject the color even ramp the contrast right up and create a surreal hard and edgy feel.

I've dome some work before for psychobilly/rockabilly grooups and the always seems to want raw, rough, fun, horror and sorry to say those images dont say that to me. I keep thinking classics.

If you were not to tell us it was for psychobilly I would be singing your praise for the wonderful shots you took.

    Seb.

Aha just saw you do have some color shots the Negative0* ones and their much better.

I know Seb. I kept saying all the way through they were too classical for the band, but they're just for the inner sleeve, in place of the band photos for each member I think. The cover art is a different story altogether - blood and guts and skulls and all the usual silly stuff. You're right though - I think I'll suggest bringing the contrast all the way up, see how that works. Their designer is gonna do some work on them I think?

I was looking at your live work on the Spellbound site the other day btw - I knew I knew your username from somewhere :) The site's one of mine.

Did you meet with the designer yet? If so how did it go?

Still waiting on the band members to choose which ones they're using. They have to go to him today though. All a bit of a rush job.
