Regarding the gear, Canon 20d, Tamron 28-73 2.8, Canon 10-22, Canon 70-300 and a good ol Canon 50mm. I actually picked up most of it in Asia cos it was a little over half the price of Dublin. Sim Lin Square in Singapore is particularly good for camera gear but you've really got to know what you want and also how much it's worth. They'll try to charge you the earth for it at first but if you have time, patience and a bit of hard neck you can play one dealer off the other and get a good price.

When I set out, I didn't have anything valuable with me other than an ipod and an old film SLR as people had warned me against bringing anything expensive while backpacking. In reality though, so long as you're not an idiot and leave your stuff lying around, it's pretty safe. Once I realised this, I picked up the camera stuff and even had a small laptop sent out from home which was essentially really for backing stuff up (unless you want to spend all your time in internet cafes). Thankfully, I didn't meet anyone in the whole year who had anything stolen from them.

Nice one thanks John, i will have all my gear + laptop with me. Not really concerned regards safety/security as it has as much a chance of being damaged /stolen here. I actually got into photography through my plans for travelling. I wanted to be able to record the world properly so wanted to get some proper experience with an slr before heading off....thats how it started all those months ago..now Im hooked for life...
