If a person is found to be unfit to plead, does a charge go away? Or can a person be fit to stand trial later? Or could a person be remanded in custody indefinitely? Just asking in view of the Stokes case was up yesterday in the Dublin District Court.

section 4 Criminal Law (Insanity) Act 2006

The court adjourns proceedings so they can be reinitiated at a later stage if the accused becomes fit to plead. The court may also order the detention of the person in a mental health facility.
