tv3 is broadcast off maghera , you probably have a vhf aerial which picks up rte1 and 2 and that channel 4 is some dodgy deflector near galway , i have seen it before on vhf iirc but not sure) and its no way coming from the north :p

tv3 and tg4 are both uhf, get a uhf aerial for both of them and point it sse towards maghera

The grid-like part of the aerial is the reflector and should be pointing north, away from the transmitter. The narrow part with the X elements should point SSE, as Spongebob said.

Note: If you want to use just the one aerial, you could try pointing the narrow end of the aerial NE or ENE or thereabouts to pick up Cairn Hill. The X elements should be aligned horizontally.

Otherwise you will need a VHF Band III aerial with the rods pointing vertically to get full RTE 1 and 2 reception. The aerial you got is meant to work for Maghera's TV3 and TG4 only and the elements should be aligned horizontally.

Here is a useful website on Maghera: http://www.irish-tv.com/maghera.asp

Sorry for digging up old post. Any idea where I can get one of these VHF tv aerials?

Any GOOD electrical wholesale. A decent Log periodic will work for DAB too.

For reception from Maghera a VHF aerial and a green tip UHF aerial is required to receive TV3 AND TG4 as previously stated. However a 10db gain inst much of a gain in my opinion. I'd recommend use of a Televes Masthead and power supply perhaps Model no 5351 available in most good electrical stores. This gives approx a boast of upto 29db

I'd try it without an amp first. There are places in Galway where even 6dB gain for Maghera is fine. Other places in county where Carn Hill is better (all UHF).

Amps are really only to compensate for cable loss. They are never a replacement for not having the right aerial.

This is all I can find on the net. Any one have any links or mail order supplier contacts for said log periodic aerial.

The aerials you have found are 'BIG' and expensive. Probably will work but to make life difficult they are horizontally polarized in the pictures. You need vertical polarization and with their sizes near impossible on a chimney mast with a standard 6 foot mast.

This is what you want. Again in the picture it is horizontally polarized and you will need to mount it vertically. I will see can I find a dealer in Ireland.

Do I need two of these also?

    Which one is best.

Can I send output from combiner as input to amp?

Thanks for all help up to now.

If you use the Maghera (south of you) transmitter you will need one VHF LP7 vertically polarized for RTE1 and 2
    http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/test_ne...duct=1&id=4439

For TV3 and TG4 you will need a Group CD UHF aerial, horizontally polarized as in the picture, something like this http://www.blake-uk.com/prod_products_aerial_DMX.aspx

As To be Confirmed and Watty have said you may be able to receive from the Cairn Hill (east of you) transmitter in Longford. You would only need one UHF Group B Horizontally polarized http://www.blake-uk.com/prod_products_aerial_DMX.aspx

I am afraid it is trial and error as to which transmitter is best for you. Personally I would try Cairn Hill first. One aerial, no diplexer but a booster maybe required.

Sorry I can't be anymore help.

Got it. Thanks for all the help.

With the help of a boardsie who called round the house we repositioned the aerial for Cairn Hill as advised by many posts.

Got all four. All a bit grainy. I think with a better amp, a grouped aerial and more height there is much room for signal improvement.

To the boardsie who called round thanks again. I will call round and hold your ladder the next time you need to go up to repay. Would like to check out you setup also :D
