Car respray questions

    Ok,

I'm going to get the Mustang resprayed as the paint job was pretty bad with rough places, spots where the paint isn't thick enough, old paint bleeding through on the roof and paint missing near window seals. Its a fairly light blue at the moment, I might make it a little deeper. so I have a few questions:

I would like to strip it myself (as I want to take off all the chrome and the windows) would this save be much money, considering I'd then have to get it trailered to the paint place?

With the change in the paint laws will this job be more expensive then last year?

Is it worth stripping the car down to metal (me or a painter), or just a bit of sanding and new paint on top?

How much will this cost (I have a ballpark figure)?

    Thanks people

Is this a certain Mustang that I used to see parked near Swords until recently ?

    Nice car !

What is the original colour and how good at DIY are you ?

Obviously every hour you spend stripping saves you money, probably €50 each hour or thereabouts !

If you have planned to spend big money then you really need to go back to bare metal, do it once and do it right !

I have about 25 hours stripping my '64 Merc, and I started thinking it was only bumpers and lights !!

I want it right so I dont mind, it will be a slow process, lots of new metal going in there so it will be totally rust free. Thats the problem going over old paint, you dont know who has filled what and when, so old repairs could come back and haunt you ruining an expensive paint job !

The new paint laws should not affect things, in fact its introduction has been delayed, or they are not enforcing at the moment according to one painter I know !

You really need to decide, is this a quick freshen up or a b4lls out job !

It was originally aqua green/blue, I'm not bad at DIY, I'll give anything a try and I have done a bit of work on the car myself.

I want to go for a full paint job, the last paint job went over the original, I really want to leave it out in the rain and not worry about it all the time.

So thats going to be a down to the metal job I suppose, how many layers of paint will that end up as and will I have a car that has a comparable level of protection as a modern paint job?

Well, simple question, not so simple answer, basically, you will have basecoat/filler, maybe basecoat again, paint - metallic /2coats/, clar coat /2coats/. But it could change, for example only 1 coat of clear, it depends on paints used, technology etc...
But, you should get paint as good as on any of "them new cars" at the end.

What's the score in Ireland with the supply / use of cellulose paint? I've got all the topcoat I need here in the UK, but might not get round to using it before I'm meant to, so I'll be hiding in a garage somewhere!
