How do you go about tailoring your images?

When you've got your curves ,burns and dodges out of the way . How do you go about finishing the image ,say if you've cropped it a little.
Is there a standard size in photoshop that you aim for ,or is it a ratio thing.

I've not ever put a frame on my images as I didn't see the point ,but I've got my camera long enough now to start moving on to editing a little.

I do think frames add character to an image ,gives them some more definition.

    Thanks,
    Brian.

There are two considerations I have when cropping and they are 1) does this look right and 2) will I want to print it. If I'm going to want to print it then I have to crop it to an aspect ratio which my printer can print.

If, on the other hand, I decide not to print it for the time being, I don't worry so much about the aspect ratio.

As for the framing, sometimes I do it, sometimes I don't. I'm more likely to do it if the photograph is black and white although there are a few colours around the flickr stream. One or two of the more recent ones I have in mind of printing as a poster, so that has coloured what I did with the framing...

    Hope this helps.

I usually never worry about cropping, if it works it works - I'll find a way to get it on paper!

I don't really frame online any more unless it's really needed.

    Lazyness I guess?

If you just want a black frame, select black as your background cover, go to Image - Image Size and increase by however much you want! :)

You could record an action in ps so you only have to go through it once. For lazy people like me.

I usually edit for web then if I want to print it I go back and do it again, so when I'm done, I go to image size and make the longest side 1000px. I always crop to the 6x4 ratio (I have to use the selection tool becuase I still can't get the crop tool to stick to a ratio, doh) or square, so then when I add my border using the canvas size (is that the same thing as going to image-image size through the menu?), just adding on 10px to each side I know it'll need to be 1010x677.

I'm still in the habit of adding a black border because I don't like how my pictures look on white, mostly - and that's the flickr background colour... seems I'm going against the fashion these days ;)

i never use the dodge and burn tool - if i want to selectively play with an image's brightness, i'll use the lasso too, feather the selection, and then use curves.

I went through a period of adding big black borders to all my pics but I've gotten over that now and don't add any. Another habit I had was cropping images and again I don't do this anymore. I try to frame all my pics through the viewfinder.

I try to frame stuff myself ,but the ole 350D can be like looking through a straw sometimes.

Say I have a photo of 1000x670 and I set the backround to ,white of 1010x677 ,if I then set the backround again with black of 1115x682

Will this give me a white black border ,like the photo is mounted on white board with a black frame ?

Here are a few frame variations from me.

    367980608_372fc59dcd_m.jpg224689662_22f3d18277_m.jpg

I don't normally add frames cos sometimes I save the final picture
with the frame in it, and then when it comes to printing later on I have
to crop again and that pee's me off. hehe

    nice shiny .

    Thanks Brian,

the frame on the left photo wasn't meant to be that
    big.

Somehow, when i was flattening the layers to
save as a .jpg, it went all big for some reason.
Was too lazy to fix it. hehe

Having had a bit too much time on my hands a few months ago (or trying succeesfully to avoid doing what I was supposed to be), I wrote a script which resizes a bunch of images for flickr, adds a double border, and a watermark signature (rendered from text). Click here for an example (there're mono examples in the photostream as well).

I wrote it on Linux originally, and it uses ImageMagick for all the imaging stuff, but I've also had it working with Cygwin under Windoze. If the last sentence make sense to anybody and they're interested, PM me and I can send you the script

I crop down to 1500x1000 at at least 225 DPI. It's big enough that if I ever lose the original raw file (it's happened), I'll still have something big enough to work with. I don't care much if people take my photos, everything except photos of my family are released under the creative commons and you're free to use it as you will, save that you credit me for it's use.

_Brian_, I have an action for CS2 that will add anyone of about 15 frames including a fake wood one! Let me know if you want it...

One way is to increase the canvas size as suggested by say 200 pixels, then add a stroke (little f symbol on bottom of the layers pallet, making sure to unlock your layer)
Change the position of the stroke to inside
Change the size to half of your size increase (100 pixels here)
Change the fill type to gradient
Change the style to shape burst
    Edit your gradient to choice
You can save your favourites as styles to applied as a single click from the style pallet.
