    A few questions,
What is S/PDIF audio ? and do most DVD players have it ?

    I have a Panasonic DVD s 295 , how will i know if it's
compatible with a set of speakers that use S/PDIF ?

    Cheers

It's a digital audio output and yes most DVD players have it in electrical or optical form. Most common use is to connect it to a AV receiver for dolby digital or dts surround sound.

ok , so there is a set of speakers i have my eye on and they include a decoder
box, so i can connect that with normal co-ax proably yeah ?
and then the S/PDIF connections are for the speakers ?

Youve got things a little mixed up there , Spdif ( which stands for sony /philips digital interface ) is a digital connection , carrying all 5 or more channels of audio, its the Spdif which goes to the decoder , the decoder will then send an analog signal to the speaker.
