Where can I test my download speed?

I currently use IrishISTest and EchosDuNet but I'd like to be able to download a big file from an FTP located in Dublin that has a huge upload (e.g. 100Mbps).

I remember when I had IBB, the Tech. Support guys used to ask me to download a file from an Irish FTP to have an accurate idea of the download speed but I can't remember where that/what that was!

for upload youd really need to use the online tests

I echo this one. Heanet have excellent connectivity to INEX and should give a reasonable estimate of your connections download speed once your ISP peers directly with them at Inex - which in your case they do.

That's odd... It's the same Java Application used as IrishISPTest.com however my download behaves very differently.

On SpeedTest.ie, download starts at around 4Mbps and stays there but on IrishISPTest.com it starts at 7.5Mbps then keeps dropping down. Is it the same for you guys?

Getting around 500Kbps so I'm happy!

Good stuff!! The bigger files I only put up today. I guess 20MB isn't really enough to test your speed properly where as a 500MB file will give you a really good idea.

Also try http://www.numion.com/ gives download speed and surfing speeds, plus keeps a history of the last 50 tests for stats.

A lot of these test depends very much on the Server at the other end e.g.:

Speedtest - Download of 1.3 and an up of 257 (UK SIte)

Irish ISP speed test - download of 1.6 and an up of 271 (usually this give the worst results - Irish Site)

Numion - download 2.7 and up 302 (UK site)
