I've recently been playing with the aperature on my Nikon d50 -- i wonder am i setting the f stop too high , as the clarity seams to be suffering

This one is using f8 and i feal lack a sharpness :-

This one is at f13 and again i feal lacks clarity

do i need to open the camera a bit more to get better clarity , or is it something else .
    Thanks.

The mountain one is on a tripod , just think there is a murky look to it , wondering is this cause aperature was set to low , would f8 have been better in this instance ?

i wouldn't have said that was particuarly murky - i read your first post as you thought your images were soft; not quite what you were getting at.
do other images look fine on your monitor?

Hey baz, the pics would need to be a lot bigger to make a judgement on them.

I'm not great at spotting sharpness, but your mountain one is likely to look a bit bleh because of the haze from the sun. I find that happening to those kinds of shots all the time.

Large version of the church looks fine, what may have happened is that the AF sensor locked on to the branches instead of the church though. The branches do look sharper.

Also the church one could do with a little more contrast and a teeny bit more underexposure. That would give it a more perceived sharpness. It looks fairly ok to me though and don't I think there is anything wrong with the lens. The subject of the other one will always give a feeling of unsharpness. It is not a good choice to judge the sharpness of your lens.

i've uploaded the church one , there is something about the clarity thats not right to me ! looked great on location --

Elven - Those murky mountain ones , also annoy me, look great when there , even in lcd , and then when i get home , major dissapointment , just wondered if i opened the lens a bit more would this aide clarity .

Roen - i think you are right about af , messing up background i.e. the church.

It's a nice shot. Where was it taken?

I had a quick go at it in CS3 and came up with this. If you don't want your picture edited, just say and I'll take it down.
