Laptop to TV via VGA connection - fuzzy lines

Just back from the Sony Centre having spent €25 for this VGA (15 pin) connector the guy said would enable me use my television as a monitor. I've tried it on with Acer Ferrari and Dell Inspiron but all I can get on the VGA channel is fuzzy rainbow lines. Do I need to change the graphic settings to get a clear picture or is there something else I'm missing / doing wrong?

What make TV is it ?

If it is an LCD HDTV most have a max resolution of 1366x768 with 1360x768 being the max computer resolution supported. If you are using the clone display mode your laptops resolution must be equal or below that resolution.

Try a common resolution like 1024x768 on the laptop and then enable clone display mode with the TV plugged in and see what happens.

A good ten year old Sony TV which won't allow me to change the resolution, at least not with the current remote control. VGA channel is at 640x480 and I don't think my laptop's resolution can go that low.

Yeah by the sounds of it that may be the problem your laptop should definitely do 640x480 but it will look like crap at that resolution.

What model number is it as you can look up it up and see the specifications otherwise check the manual is this TV actually supports VGA input then the resolutions supports should have been listed in the manual.

The TV was top of the range at the time (minus the widescreen) and when we got it we used it as a monitor for the desktop. Anyway, I'm going to take my laptop out and try it on a different TV cos I only need it to change the BIOS settings and install Windows XP (Dell screen is ****ed, see the thread I started yesterday).
