Im wondering is there anything out there like where by I can from my own Home MAC log into an office network at work.

    Something like VNC or webex.

Would i need static IP on both sides for this to work?

    edit:
Just rang bt there and it appears that i dont have a static IP at home.
So creating a VPN connection is out then, unless someone has a trick up their sleave. VNC will do this but alas afaik it will only work over a VPN

    Any ideas?

Simple solution is dyndns.org - register (for free) and you can use a domain name like jank-kicks-ass.com. A small program is installed on your computer (see note below) that occassionally pings dyndns.org informing it of your current i.p. address at which point it updates the dns record for your connection. There are several such services available:

    NoIP
    DynDNS
    ChangeIP

    to mention just a few.

Note: Many broadband routers provide a section in their config to do this, I use this facility on a Netgear router. This negates the need to install anything.

So if i do this on both ends I wont need any software like VNC server\viewer on either machine??

How would I connect then? VPN or does Mac Os X come with its own rdp software (Not very mac literate as you can see)

You still need something like VNC alright. What I was referring to was the dynamic DNS problem. Netgear Routers have a panel where you provide the details of your dyndns.org account and it looks after the updating of your dns entry to ensure it's alwats up to date.

There are several VNC client/servers apps for MacOS X :

    Chicken Of VNC
    RealVNC

This step by step manual may help you get the idea of what's involved.

Apple also make a commercial offering called Apple Remote Desktop, pit expensive though and is part of OSX Server IIRC.

    Good Luck !

If you want to log in from Home to your Office PC, you only need the static IP at the Office end.

However if your Office PC is connected to the internet throught a router and a firewall, you will need to port forward from the router to your office computer all traffic on the port that VNC is using, plus specify that it is not to be blocked on the firewall.

Need to check with your IT Department.

If your Office computer is a PC, you could use Logmein.com. That can be accessed from a mac.

If have this up and running now but something aint right.
On the LAN I can VNC on to the required machine.

However when im at home it cant find the machine in question.
I ahve port forwarding set up do that for port x all traffic should go to the server but this doesnt happen.

Oh as it turns out I have a static IP address so i dont really need dyndns but have it set up.

This is the address is should be putting into the vnc viewer right?

Edit: Just got it going there, but have to see if it will work from home. There may be a firewall issue at home.
