Hey all! The 18-55mm kit lens I got with my canon feels...kinda cheap. I ahve a couple of nice Sigmas for my 35mm SLR and I was wondering...how can you tell what lens fits the EOS mount, or any mount for that matter? I'm thinking 28-80 mm btw.

if they are canon mounted they should work.

What's the color of little plastic thingy at the beginning of the lens?
White is for EFS mount should work on 300D - 400D range
Red is for EF mount should work too.

If it's a canon EOS 35mm you've got the sigma will fit on the rebel - but if it's the same 28-80 as mine then you'll get error 99 when you try to shoot at anything but the max aperture - which becomes a complete pain. And it will be more like a 50-100(ish) than 28-80 because of the digital crop factory thingamybob.

Hmm....I don't think it will fit, just becasue its a lens I got with my Sigma camera...hmmm...what's the worst that could happen if I try? Do canon make a range? Otherwise you're saying go with the EFS Sigma series? Sorry, I'm just a bit overwhelmed.

Sigma make lenses for most (if not all) common types: nikon, canon, minolta etc.
if you got your lense with your sigma camera then it's sigma mounted (not too sure about it), so it wont work on canon, most of all it wont fit into the mount.

Yeah I figured it was something like that...I should have been clearer from the offset! Basically, I had an idea my film lenses wouldn't fit my digital. I just like the Sigma brand, so I was thinking of buying some of them for my digital. For example, this kinda thing:

this one is good enuff for its price - nice range, good size/weights, and even little red stripe around the edge. Friend got this one as an everyday lens.

    no miracles however.

If you've got an hour or so to spare. Sit down and read this. http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/lenses.html
This is easily the best beginners guide/article there is on Canon lenses.

I like to photo landscapes and the outdoors, and wildlife. But I'll probably need a good zoom as well as a variable focal leght under 100 mm too. Obviously budget is a concern, so I dunno, under 500 for now anyways. If I were buying too, I'd like to spend maybe 300 each?

    TelePaul,

I use the Sigma 70-300 APO DG for a lot of what I do (mainly landscape/travel and sports) photography. In Ireland it will cost you 199E or so.

18-200 you chosen first is good enuff starter lens.

70-300 is another thing alltogether. 200-300 wildlife range is kinda dark, lens is big, 70 is no good for landscapes.

My advice - get 18-200, then after a year get wide and telezoom of appropriate focal length, if you need them :)
