    Hi all,

I am going to be going away to Canada for a year on the Under-35 Usit scheme. You have to purchase fairly expensive health insurance from Usit (~€500) This covers health, belongings etc. in Canada.

My question is: Do you think that I need to keep up my Irish health insurance while I am away? It would be another €500 odd and I'm not sure what use it will be to me when I am out of the country.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi there,

I'm here in Canada on the same visa and I cancelled my Bupa just before leaving Ireland. It was after I found that that it could be used over here as well on some international coverage thing. I would ring your insurer just to find out that if you leave them do you have to start all over again when you go back to Ireland. It's steep enough though paying the 500 to cover you here never mind paying out the same again for Irish insurance.

While on the subject of insurance and health I discovered when I got here that for those needing a medical for work in any health or education sector don't have it done in Ireland. Usit request that you pay 400 euro for it (at least they were asking me for that and I didnt take them up on it) and it delays your visa application by 6 weeks or so. You can have the same medical done here for 100 canadian dollars (which can be claimed back on your insurance) and the lovely people at the SWAP office (USITs superior equivalent here) will apply for a change to your visa which I'm told can take about 3 weeks or so.

    Hope this helps. :)
