It's a mystery to me how people can still utter the words Beef or Salmon and Cheltenham in the same breath.

Even more of a mystery that people can't use the search function.

Any one remember a chaser by the name of Carvilles Hill? Very similar to Kauto Star. Strong front runner and a very short price on the day for the Gold Cup but.....it fell when put under pressure by some of the horses that stayed with its initial gallop. While Kauto Star is a good horse, not sure if he will get away with it in Cheltenham.

If the going is good then War of Attrition will be hard to beat. Hedgehunter ran a great race last year for second at a decent price and is likely to be in the frame again this year.

    Carvill's Hill didn't fall.

It was the year Jenny Pitman ran Golden Freeze just to take CH out of the race you may recall, by taking him on up front. The worst thing I have ever witnessed as horses should be run to win their own races and not with the sole intention of spoiling another's chance. To do so in any race is wrong, but to do so in the Blue Riband of NH racing was a disgrace.

There was a titanic finish and one of my favourite jockeys, Adrian Maguire, won on Cool Ground at 25/1. :)

    Taff

I'll go with your memory on the Carvills Hill Gold Cup! I do remember the tactics used and the controversey following same.

Not sure if anyone this year will try to nobble Kauto Star deliberately but you have to think he will have problems if there is a bigish field and a number of horses prepared to take it on.

The best hope for that horse may be Ruby Walshs riding tactics on the day. At this stage both jockey and horse have made mistakes with each other so if they get it together on the day you never know....

That said at the odds offered at the mo my small investment will be elsewhere!

i hope the op is having a laugh about Beef Or Salmon, Hourigan surely realises by now its a waste of time bringing him to Cheltenham.

hourigan will not stay away with this horse -no way would i back it -the only way he could get into contention in my opinion is if the ground was heavy and race run at slow pace -which i cant see happening

plus what u mean war of attrician bad form

last 3 runs 3rd in a lexus and second in the durkan and second in the nicholson

before his win in the gold cup last year he was second in the lexus and fifth in the durkan on the two previos starts

form the same or similar to his prep last year -this is what people are forgetting -i will be standing at the winning post at the top of cheltenham hill on 16 march this year going bananas when he wins and taking a wedge out the bookies (well at least a grand anyway )

like other years the young pretenders can f -off lol

i ave 2 say maybe i wz wrong on wars bad form in light of his form in the run up 2 last yr but that wz because i consider it bad when i have a hefty punt on him nd he doesnt win!!!!!....it should be interestin to c if he can reproduce the run he ran last yr!!

I have listened to this Carvill's Hill/Golden Freeze nonsense enough times. If a horse can't jump a fence properly simply because he is being challenged for the lead is not Jenny Pitman's fault.

If you are jockey/trainer and you can identify a weakness in an opponent and exploit it completely within the rules, that is called race-riding and sound tactics.

Beef Or Salmon hasnt any chance unless soft ground and a Freak amount of inurys makes it a small field!!! Has Beef or salmon ever won a race in a big field?
kauto stars jumping is the big question.
If he stays up he wont be beten.

Beef or Salmon hasn't a chance in Cheltenham lads. It really shouldn't even be sent over.

Robin, I dont completely disagree with your view, and if Carvills Hill wasnt good enough to put up with Golden Freeze's attention, then he didnt deserve to be a gold cup winner. However, what sickens me about her, (Jenny Pitman) is that she always maintained a holier than thou attitude to her horses, a moral high ground that Henrietta Knight now holds, and always maintained that there were no untoward tactics in the Gold Cup. If she was up front about it and said that he was in there as a spoiler, I'd have had some respect for her.

And for the record, Pipe, Scudamore and most of the racing public beleive that Carvills Hill's injuries were sustained when bullsozing the first fence. His race effectively ended there and then. SHame as his Welsh National performance was from another planet.

A quick question about this horse. Mr Hourigan had effectively admitted that Beef or Salmon didn't have what it takes after last year's race. He's on the racecard for Friday (according to sportinglife.co.uk) but is not mentioned in the betting, which would indicate that he's not expected to run. If even the trainer feels that he hasn't a hope, what's the point in paying more and more money at each of the supplementary stages to keep him in there?

(I thought he might have been running in one of the other races, like the Christie's Foxhunters, but I can't find him anywhere).

Would have been pretty simple to check if he was in the betting yourself wouldn't you think? Pointless post to be honest and something which could have dismissed by checking the betting for the GC in which he is still listed.

Well, perhaps you can find him in the betting then, here:

    http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/cheltenham2007/entries/card_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=cheltenham/entries_racecards.html&MEETING=1&RACE=3

    'Cos I can't see him.

I would recommend that you use more than one resource.

Thank you, Bluetonic, I've taken your advice.:D

So back to the main point. Why are they sending this horse over for yet more anguish?
