I've a Dell 5150 as my primary machine. It came with an LG/Hitachi hybrid GWA4164B DVD writer that has been working out rather peachily for single layer discs but steadfastly refuses to write dual layer discs, even with the firmware up to date and using Nero 7.

Now, perhaps I should be using verbatim discs but money doesn't grow on trees so I've been trying it on Mediawrite discs from here as I've always had good results with the single layer mediawrite greys/classics on both this drive and on the NEC3520 on my old machine.

Hence I'm in the market for a new drive. One that will actually write dual layer without my being tempted to scream at it. Preferably one from komplett as I'm going to get a hard drive from there anyway so I may as well get the postage effectively for free on the writer.

Ideally I'd like someone to step forward and say "I've been using those dual layer discs on this drive (pointing to drive), both for archive data and content playable on a standalone DVD player and they've been working out really well." That'd be good. Thanks in advance etc.

The problem really isn't the drive it is the media anything bar MKM (which Verbatim use) and RICOHJPN is not worth using as DVD+R DL requires better quality materials in the disc's construction. Cheap ones like RITEK are just not up to the cut which is why the burn so badly on writers, others like CMC MAG vary in quality a lot.

Actually a drive at the moment that writes even the crappy Ritek DL media is the LG GSA-H22N if you want to keep on using that kind of media that would be a drive to get but Komplett do not sell it.

Next best, get a NEC 7173 then update to latest official firmware or try a modded one.
