What is the best site to start out on, he doesnt want to play for money until he's has a bit of practice!

Most sites have 'play-money' tables. In truth play money is not a lot of fun and he'd be better off spending only about 20 minutes on play money tables getting to know the 'controls', then deposit maybe 20Euro and see how he gets on. There are cheap and cheerful games on the likes of Padypowerpoker.com where 20Euro could last him a long time.

I recommend Pokerstars. Loads of play money tables and play money sit n go's and play money tournies. Great software and [deep breath for needlessly controversial point to spice up the thread] less scumbags than some of the poker networks that bookermaker sites feed into.

party poker is great for starters as they offer play chip sit and goes so there's slightly more of a competitive atmosphere. when starting a real money account sng's are the easiest way to get to grips with the game at minimum cost imo.
