    Hi.

Just wanted to know from girls how long your period would have to be late for you to be worried about it. I dont think i have a reason to be awfully worried and am not to worried yet, cos i know that can make it take longer to come! But just wondered what others thought about when there late...

It depends on so many things. If you are worried about a potential pregnancy then go see a doctor or buy a home test kit. Worrying only increases stress which is likely to make your period even later.

Personally, I'm on the pill at the moment so withdrawal bleeds are absolutely regular 28 days apart. When I'm not taking hormones my periods are very irregular. If I went beyond 35 days I would go get it checked.

Usually bang on time for me so if i had cause for concern i.e. if i had unprotected sex - as late as one day would freak me out.

In saying that i was at the doc recently as i had one that lasted 10 days and they are usually only 4 days. My point being the doctor told me a blip or 2 is no harm at all and to expect changes from month to month.

But everyone knows their own body and cycle.

    It would depend tbh.

If I was late, but had maybe been sick for the few days leading up to it, I wouldn't be too alarmed, as even being sick (like a stomach bug) can knock your cycle off.

However, when I got pregnant in May 2005, I had a sick stomach, sore boobs and a weird metallic taste in my mouth, at least a week before my period was due. I took a test 4 days before it was due, but I knew what the result would be before I'd taken it.

It depends on how you are feeling. I "felt" pregnant before I ever did that test. After having a baby your cycle can be a bit all over the place for a while, so even though my period has been late in arriving for the last three months in a row, I wasn't feeling any different, so I didn't do any tests.

I'm on the pill but a while ago I missed a period completeley. took a pregnancy test and everything and it came out negative. Next time I was at the doctor I said it to him and he said it can be common to miss a period when you're taking the pill. I'd still recomend taking a test, if only to ease your conscience.

'well today i am a week late. have had two or three twinges of pain but nothin near what i would uaually have. they only last a few seconds. but it has kinda made me stop worring as much as i was. i think i would be to afradi of taking a test, so might wait a few more days and see what happens.'

    Isn't it different for everybody?
A friend of mine would know she was pregnant if she was a few hours late.
I'm sometimes a couple of weeks late.

Wouldn't it be better to just get a pregnancy test? Stop the worrying, wouldn't it?

how could she tell if she was pregnant after a few hours????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 136 ✭✭kaalgat

cus her period is always on time to the second!
She knew she was pregnant with her first child when her period didn't come in the morning when it should have.
    And i think she's lucky.
I'm always left wondering when I will have my next period

the worry doesn't help at all and is most likely the cause of your wait. but a week late is a reasonable wait. there wouldn't be harm in buying a pregnancy test take at this stage.

Do a test, mind at ease, no more worry. If it's still late after taking the test (and the test was negative) and you're usually on time, then I'd say you should make an appointment with your GP.

Not to freak you out or anything but I had period pains for a week before I bit the bullet and done a test, and it was positive. Period pain can be cause by an increased hormone levels and when you pregnant your hormones are all over the place. I would take the test immediately, if just for peace of mind. Because even if it is positive, knowing is much better than worrying about it. And worrying can also cause your period to be late. Do the test and let us know how you get on.

    hi hun,

your right that worrying can delay matters, but to be on the safe side and regardless of what the test says tomorrow you should invest in some folic acid tablets, there not just for pregnant women there for everywoman who could become pregnant, even those on the pill.

best of luck regardless of outcome and if he is not around, then a good friend can give you just as much support as you wait for the blue line.

'I was 2 weeks late last month and this month I'm already 3 weeks late with no signs of my period and no symptoms of a pregnancy.

I took the morning after pill in September and before that I was always regular. I've read that the morning after pill should have had no affect on my periods for more than 1 cycle. As I am not on the pill that could not be the problem.

I've done 3 pregnancy tests in the last 2 months, most recent was 6 days ago and they've all been negative. I'm confused and worried.

Does anyone know anybody who's experienced anything similar? I plan on going to my GP in the next week but any advice would be appreciated.'

good luck! and try not to stress (even if that is impossible...).

You've said it yourself. Go to your GP. That's the only way you'll know for sure

I'm sure Thaed (or someone else more knowledgeble than me) will correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that home tests were jsut as accurate as surgery tests these days?

You have to go to the doctor to get it confirmed even if you do a home test, although when I did the doctor told me that it is very rare to get a false positive, and they use a test very similar to confirm anyway

sorry i've no clue about how reliable some pregnancy tests are, though i'd assume they have to pass certain standards, so i'd say they are reasonably reliable.

it could be just worry setting your period back (i'd say you are giving your body plenty of reason to freak out!), and hopefully it will be back soon.

just shows how susceptible your hormone system is to stress! glad its sorted :)

The best thing to do is buy a test! As daunting as it may be.. you'll get an answer straight away, in the mean time, you're only gonna drive yourself crazy worrying about it. And as already mentioned above, worry & stress can make ur period late too..
