    Here's the thing:

I am strongly considering buying a ps3 when they are released. But, I don't have a flat screen television. I am using a 27inch crt television.

The only thing good about ps3 is the graphics, otherwise it's no better than ps2,
so do you really expect us to say no,
It's not like it wont work on your tv or any tv, so why would you ask such a question?
Yes it would be better on a 29 inch ctr
better again on a 32 inch
    better again on a lcd
better again on a better lcd
better again on a better bigger lcd
    a trend emerges

That was a bit un-called for Passport......

SwingKing, the Playstation 3 will work no bother on your Tv, and it's not just like the PS2.....by any means...

You do know that the xbox 360 wont work on a standard 50 hertz television, only a 60 hertz television or flat screen television. That's a fact!!

I figured it was the same with the playstation 3

The 360 does work on a 50 hertz tv, just certain games don't. Same with the gamecube.

I imagine the PS3 is the same but I can't say I know for sure.

Hz was never mentioned in the first post so I had no idea that's what was being referred to.I haven't heard anything about the PS3 and that yet, can someone who has an imported PS3 tell us if the games have any info on that on the back?

I have two HD LCD TV's, 26inch and 32inch. Maybe i'll use one for my xbox360 and the other for my soon to be PS3 :)

No worries, you still should be able to play on it.
Eventually they might be more inclined to buy an LCD TV at some point, most people say it's just like the change from black and white to colour, everyone will change eventually.

HD-CRTs are just as good if not better than LCD ones. Just to put that to rest. They are just not popular here. I tried my best to get one over a LCD but the only thing available here is the samsung slimfit which suffers from geometry problems so I stayed away.

Now answering your question. Would you buy a sports car and put a micra engine in it.

The PS3 has lots more than just graphics but you will be missing out on a lot if you use a small SD CRT. The majority of first gen games on the console will be nothing special bar the graphics. Yes the PS3 will have fun games but there's loads of those on the PS2, gamecube, xbox etc.

So my advice would be if you are getting a PS3 get broadband and a decent TV

I just happened to see this thread on the homepage and I'm feeling a little dirty even just looking at the PS Forum.

I just want to make one point then I'm out of here,

Flat screen tv's are essentially a CRT with a flat screen instead of the slight curve, they provide a better viewing angle.

Plasma and LCD tv's are plasma or lcd , stop referring to them as "flat screens"

    * Now where's that flame suit

I got the samsung 32" slim fit crt and brought it back because the ps2 looked rubbish. I then got the 26" samsung LCD and the PS2 still looked rubbish on it, then got the XBOX360 and it looks stunning.

Strange, but for some reason PS2 games dont seem to work well on LCD's. Dont know why though.

was it connected by scart ? scart, even RGB scart looks crap on an LCD tv. Component or hdmi if you want fancy graphics :)

Scart, i tried to get the component connection for the PS2 but apparently may PS2 didnt support component. I got mine on launch and it was only added to the firmware later on.

I read that there is a feature of blu ray discs that means that they don't work well on old television sets. it was something the tv set having to support some copy protection feature; and that if they did not then the image quality would be lesser. i don't have time to find a link now, unfortunately. i'm out of time for the moment.
