Well, for the UK, presumably 99% the same for Ireland. March 23rd.
London, 24 January 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 will be launched in the PAL territories including the United Kingdom on 23rd March 2007 at a price of £425.

Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year dependent on demand.

An expected one million PS3 units will be made available during the initial launch period to all SCEE territories.

SCEE also announced a stellar launch line-up of over 30 game titles for PS3, including eagerly awaited titles published by SCEE such as Resistance: Fall of Man™, MotorStorm™, Genji™: Days of the Blade, FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION and Ridge Racer™ 7. An exceptional range of titles in every genre will also be available at launch from the world’s leading third party publishers, including Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal, and Sony Online Entertainment.

In addition to games on disc, an exciting range of fully-featured downloadable games
will debut on the PLAYSTATION®Network. These will include gaming icons such as Tekken®: Dark Resurrection and Gran Turismo® HD Concept; the fully-featured PS3 debut of the best-selling franchise Gran Turismo, realised with full HD (1080p) visual quality. Created by Polyphony Digital Inc and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Gran Turismo® HD Concept has been downloaded by more than 350,000 users since it was released in December 2006 in North America and Japan.

Also available on the PLAYSTATION®Network will be brainteasers such as Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle, and innovative games such as Blast Factor™ and flOw™, designed exclusively for PLAYSTATION 3 and delivering on the promise to provide original content created by non-traditional developers and publishers.

Concurrent with the European launch, a new System Update to further enhance the entertainment potential of PS3 will be issued.

Announcing the launch details, Ray Maguire, SVP and MD of SCEUK said, “Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the UK. To be able to launch with over 30 titles including retail versions and great downloadable gaming experiences across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in the UK have been crying out for.”

i used to be really big into getting the new consols early but in all honesty, the way the prices have gone its just not worth it. there is no way in hell its worth forking out 600+ euro for and as stated already, nothing to great in the games line up either.

Not a bad line-up. I'd say Resistance is overrated but I've heard Motorstorm is surprisingly good fun. Then there are multiformat games like RR, Oblivion and VF5.

There certainly is a lot of choice there. The ones that stand out for me are Resistance and Virtua Tennis 3. I have high hopes for VT3, the original on the DC was the only sports game I have ever liked (and that's saying something):)

pretty nice but i don't see the point in getting games that are already out on all other platforms.

i'll get one asap and i think i'll just be getting the exclusive games for the minute

Motorstorm is the only PS3 exclusive that I'd be excited about, and I'm not even a big racing game person. Still its a good launch line-up for those who haven't got a 360, plenty of good games there.

Surprised with how well the launch line-up does look, although maybe it's because I haven't played most of the moulti-format releases.

I do kinda wish I had the money for one at launch (though maybe I should be thankful!).

Just heard on the radio that due to "battery problems" (I could have misheard), that sony are pushing the date back two months. Anyone know any more? Or has it already been pushed back two months and IS coming out in March?

No mention of it anywhere, doubt the radio heard it first :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

Yeah I thought it was odd that I can't find it anywhere. Might email the station and ask them about it.

There is definitely no further delay with the launch, all the shops in the city centre I dropped into this morning all had just gotten their e-mails from head office with the PS3 info for their store.
    So I decided to go for a 4th pre-book.:D

Don't think its delayed, as you said already, it has alreay been delayed by 2 months(though i dont htink it was a battery thing, more to do with production on the blue ray drive). Will still be released in March

Thats an awful lot of money for games that I can play on my 360, in the case of some, I've played and got bored an age ago, Oblivion for example.
Better to wait til Christmas 07 and see what exclusive titles are like then.
I new WipEout would do it actually, if it can match the potential of the excellent PSP edition I'd break open my piggy bank for sure.
But the piggy bank stays intact with the prospect of playing Ridge Racer, Call of Duty, Tony Hawks, Marvel, Sonic, Need For Speed Splinter Cell, all of which I can play on my 360. I mean where are the titles that demand my attention? Where are Sonys killer apps, I know Motorstorm is supposed to be fab but what else?

1 million units to cover Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Australasia - ha.

And at €650, it'll make me think twice about trying to get one.

Em...It's €630 in Ireland and €600 in the rest of the EU.
And there was no mention of Africa..not that I have seen anyway.
