Giving non-euro money in change...

Anyone noticed the amount of non-euro change that shops give out. Recently I got what was supposed to be 2 euro. Turned out it was polish or some other thing. She had wrapped it in a fiver so I did not notice. Now I dont mind getting a fake 5cent piece cause you can just chuck it in the bin but a fake 2 euro is pushing it. Is there any action you can take against a shop. it must be illegal?

Probably a Turkish Lira, two of their coins in particular are very Euro like.

AFAIK one of the Asian countries (Thailand?) has a coin the same size, weight and even two-tone colour as our €2. I got a couple in change over the last few years.

Go back in and spend it as if it was a €2. If they object, ask them why they considered it OK to dispense in change. :D

When I was in thailand this year, one of my mates spent the last week of our time there getting change of thai notes everywhere for the 10 baht coins (Worth about 20cent). In the end he had about 100 of them and spent everyone of them over here as a 2euro coin! Put them into buses and some smoke machines took them so he stocked up.

But i think there sloads of people doing it cos there everywhere now, i check all my 2 euros nowadays.

    Lol, thats a great idea.

Haven't gotten any dodge change yet, maybe the odd 2c or 5c but nothing over that. I'd probably kick up a fuss if I was handed something other than a €2 coin that was meant to be a €2 coin. Got a fake €10 note in change from a local store before, only noticed when I got home so went back around later to see if they'd accept it as payment, they didn't, so I generally check my change these days.

These Mexican and Thai coins would easily pass for a €1 and €2 in a busy pub. (Apologies - poor pic)

If the coin has the exact same weight and size of a two euro coin, you can use to pay for your parking or get sweets from a vending machine.

Back in the days of the punt, i used to bring shoiteloads of 5 kenya shillings (about 3p at the time) back from kenya every time i was there cos its the same size and shape of the 50pence. Great for vending machines and slot machines!

But then euro came along and ruined everything. everything i tells ya!

for the record ....Dublin bus drivers never seem to check what or how much you throw in the machine Euro Or otherwise ,I've often had mornings where ive only got a tenner in my pocket & FUKK all Change & consequently root around the house to muster together a multinational pile of shrapnel nowhere near the 1.55 mark & i've never gotten any grief when i get on the bus.
If anything they seem glad you've made the effort to pay at all.

our old 5p (iirc) was the same size, weight etc as the german 1 mark coin. Every year my dad used to be filling the cigarette machines with them when we were over there.:)

I have had a few english 1p coins passed off as 5cent coins. The 5 rand is a bastard thou, seen loads of them lately.

€2 thing happened to me in town last week. Didn't realise untill I tried to spend it in a different shop. Just used it on the bus going home.

I remember when we had the punt all shops would take 1p, 2p, 5p and 10 sterling coins.

Anyways, I haven't noticed non-euro change but today I was to get €35 in change. I got 6 €5 notes and 2 were basically ripped in half.
The bank exchanged one but wouldn't touch the other. Possibly I can use it in a Dart ticket dispensor. I'll find out after work.
Very sly on the shops part

I thought the banks were supposed to change the notes if they were ripped? But in fairness getting handed two ripped notes at the same time is a bit cheeky...

Ah ran into this type of situation in Dublin 4-5 years ago.
After lunch in the work canteen, a colleague of mine saw that he got dispensed something that wasn't quite a 2 Euro coin.
After a little research we found out that he got a Thailand ten Baht coin. (which apparently vending machines etc...can't differentiate from normal two euro coins).

So we thought wow, lucky guy may have made a slight profit...did a little more reading and did a reverse thrust with everyone roaring laughter...

    10.00 THB Thailand Baht = 0.231934 EUR Euro :)

Image of the infamous coins here:

Got a Turkish 50 Bin Lira today. Only noticed it when I got home.

Its tiny so i don't know how anyone passed it off to a shop as it doesn't look like any of our coins.

As I reached into my pocket yesterday and pulled out 4 2Euro coins I'd received in change I was reminded of this topic. I pauses to tell one of the buddies to watch out and check there change, and was mid way through smugly telling them when I notice that the third 2Euro coin wasn't a 2Euro coin or even something I could identify. Slightly embarrassing!!!
