Doubts

Ok here we go, haven't done this in a while...

Today I was offered a job as a computer technician in an expanding company. The pay is pretty good, the boss seems nice and is skilled (unlike my previous one). I've accepted the job for a one month trial, starting next Monday. What's the problem so?

First of all, the location is wrong, it's here in Kerry. I've been wanting to start a new life in Dublin for a long time now but have been stuck in a serious rut which is preventing me from doing anything to pursue that want. I'm originally from Dublin, most of my family are up there and also two of my best friends. There's also another girl I'm quite fond of (if you're reading this you know who you are). I adore these people and want to be able to spend more time with them. So these are my reasons for wanting to be there. Beyond the first month I'll be placed into a one year contract, I think I just don't want to be tied down in this area, although I practically have been since 2002 and have been too scared/lazy/content to do anything about it. I'm practically spoon fed in this house so don't do very much for myself. Even this job was basically handed to me on a plate, I didn't apply for it.

Seondly, I quit my previous job as a technician in August of last year partially because I didn't like the way the boss did the jobs. We did a lot of work in schools which was a nightmare for me as I have terrible memories of school. Also, in the last year I had a change in direction regarding my career - I'd like to eventually become a train driver and just lost the buzz I used to get from the whole computers bit. My dislike of the new Windows Vista won't help things either, I'll obviously have to deal with it very soon even though I won't want to use it myself (which of course may limit my experience or ability in troubleshooting it). My desire to become a train driver is a long term goal, something I probably won't reach any time soon unfortunately.

I was offered the job because I'm known in the area to be good with computers but as I said above it just doesn't float my boat anymore. I'm happy to try it out for the month and see what happens but I have no idea beyond that. Despite what I said above, one advantage of taking the job would be that I'll be able to make more progress with my psychologist. Up to now it's really just been "get a job" but if I have one then things should progress one step further.

I don't know what job I could do in the meantime while I aim for my goal. Because I feel I'd have a better chance with the train driving if I lived in Dublin. I know they do consider addresses, since when I last applied, the application was forwarded to the HR manager for the southern/western region. But to live in Dublin I'll obviously need a job to pay the bills.

My mind is going through a tug of war over this, I just don't know what I should be doing. Is it a case of, what I want I can't have just yet?

It is time to get up off your arse. If you want a dream to come to fruition you have to chase it. The head of Iarnrod Eireann will not be coming to your front door any time soon asking you if you would like to come and train (:) ) with them as a train driver. If you want to become one you have to do something about it. You've basically said you've been sitting on your arse for 5 years now in Kerry bemoaning your lot in life while not doing anything about it. Life's opportunities are not handed to you. Time to buck up your ideas and actually do something productive if you want to achieve a goal. Good luck.

It is always said that it is better to get a job when you are in a job.
but one thing.. did you write a covering letter stating that you want to be considered for a job based in Dublin? you dont make it clear in your post.

It is not only the trains that are slow with irish rail i am afraid, their HR is as well.

Take the month and wait and see, i know it is probaly boring advice, but keep looking in dublin, but do so from a position of some security.. and put your money away,... that way you have a little nest egg for when you do move.

I am in a similar situation OP. I have wanted to move from Boston to Dublin for 5 years now. I finally was in a position to do it and had set June 1st as the big day. I too have friends and lovers there that I love to bits. A few weeks ago I found out that I am most likely going to be up for a big promotion here at work that will advance my career. And as I work for a European based company it will look great on my CV and give me a much better chance to get a job when I get to Dublin. So I am torn, agonizing actually, over what to do. I know that the logical thing to do is to wait and see what happens with the promotion and save some extra money for the move. But my heart keeps telling me to make the move in June.

I work in HR and Mark Sutton is correct. It is always easier to find a new job while you're employed. Employers are always a bit sceptical of people who are unemployed. Keep the job for the month but do everything you can to find a job in Dublin during that time. Follow your dream, but be wise about how you get there. Your friends and lovely lady aren't going anywhere ;)
