Backpacking in South America

    Hey,

I'm planning to travel for the summer and am looking around for destinations. South America is one that really appeals to me. Has anyone got any experience travelling around the continent? Any travel websites I have read seem to give the impression that it is difficult to move between countries (well it is a whole bloody continent) and that it is quite expensive. This true?

Anyone got any experience backpacking in South America?

    Cheers

Was in Peru, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay and never had an issue with visas.
It is cheap but for example I didn't find it as cheap as South East Asia.

It depends on the level of comfort you want I guess. You can cheap seat it and share with locals and animals (not joking) if you wish or you can travel in a bit more comfort. That goes for accomodation and food too.

I'm in Ecuador at the moment and have travelled most of the countries below it. (except Chile but on the way down there soon.)
Some countries are a little more expensive than others, especially Brazil.

have not really had any problem with border crossings and so on.

    cheapest to dearest
    Paraguay
    Bolivia
    Peru
    Uruguay
    Argentina
    Ecuador
    Brazil

Arg and Ecu are fairly similar and then a big jump up to Brazil.

I've a friend who's trying to organise a trip around South America. She went to major agents in Dublin to buy packages in advance, but were blown away by the prices. I've convinced them that they can just book flights and the Inca Trails (these need to be booked in advance) and to get the rest locally as they travel. I've a few friends who did it this way.

Anyway, I'm looking for a web resource that has real people's itinerarys / route maps preferably with notes on the costs of things. I've found a few but none that really cover the whole of SA (not including dodgy parts like Columbia). It would be a great starting point for them to plan their trip.

    Thanks
