the old sunday sport theme tune

right ye know the score, 9.30 sunday night after coming home or heading to the pub after your county team either winning or getting slaughtered. back in the day the summer was over in may for some, but alas the back door system, hence more games and more tv coverage. on comes the sunday game, the trumpets roar and the drums beat. it can only be the signature theme tune to the sunday game, up there with bbc's match of the day's tune. the song almost as part of the show as the matches and michael lyster refering between spillane and o'rourke.

who composed that tune and what was it called?

i know its not a big thing, but do many gaa fans miss it? i know at the turn of the noughties rte treid to revamp and look sexy, but was there really any need to get rid of that tune. match of the day never did (and thats over 40 years old)

so whats yer view on it or could ye give a damn so long as the matches are covered?

I, personally, miss it a lot. It was a signature theme song that everyone recognised when it came on.

The thing they have now is just a bland "tribal" song that is very annoying, IMO. As you said OP, BBC never changed 'Match of the Day' (because it was a classic) but why did RTE think that to change one of their most iconic theme tunes in favour of that thing would be a good thing??

Was there not a campaign or something a few years ago to get the traditional theme song back?? If there was it obviously failed - what a shame!

maybe if a few more contribute to this tread and maybe if people could be ar*ed we could start a petion, to get it back. i know it might not do much to change their minds but worth a try? some of ye might think i am mad and that its only a tune etc and i could easily watch bbc northern ireland's coverage.

if like me the all ireland final day be it hurling or gaelic was a big event. i am from roscommon so we did not have any of them in the 1990's. only recently with the minors (thankfully and luckily i was there) or having the flags out of the window shouting for galway in 1998 and 2001 or been jealous of westmeath minor and u21 success. anyway did not matter, i loved the whole build up, the bands, the gaa emblem painted on the pitch. but when that tune came on that was it, everyone shut up and sit down for hopefully the best sporting entertainment of the year.

many have whistled to the tune of match of the day when knocking the football around he park pretending to be ian wright or eric cantona, many may have done the same with the rte theme tune trying to have an organised gaelic match in the park without a ref imaging beaten kerry or the dubs (and jumpers for goal posts) god the innocent life.

anyway thats my rant, like match of the day for the bbc, sunday game is and was one of rte's flagship sporting programmes, why change something that was not broken.

incidently, any cork people here, ya know that very famous cork gaa fan that goes to every cork game, the man that wears the smabro (that big spannish hat with the cork colours) he use to always get his face on the telly, is he still around and alive and well still going to matches, just he dont seem to get spotted anymore?

I too would love to know the name of the old theme song. I found it hilarious when i heard it on Apres Match during the christmas! :D

To me it sounds a bit like James Last, could anyone clear this up?

    Thanks. :)

Yeah that guy is still around. Have seen him on telly a few times at matches this year. He's gone and sold out though! Wears a very prominent ad for Paddy Power these days...

That tune is definitely James Last. I bet if you requested it from Ronan Collins on Radio 1 he would definitely know it and probably play it.
That new tune is so sh*te. So bland and mock-serious. Even watching the opening sequence makes me faintly embarrassed for some reason, it's that rubbish.

I think the Sunday Game music is by Europe, the song is The Final Countdown..
Perhaps I'm thinking of something else though...

That was Sports Stadium which was on around 1 pm on a Saturday. Sadly not on anymore. The theme tune there talking about is for the Sunday Game which is very much still on just with a worse theme tune and presenter (Pat Spillane)

sports stadium, another bloody brilliant programme, where else could ya see aib rugby, last weeks gaa coverage (county and club), athelics and boxing and motor sport, and early days of the premership. even jimmy magee got a gig out of it. but alia, rte are content in airing rubbish middle of the road films and american thrash despite know one watching it

RTE don't appreciate the fact that "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

There is only one Sunday Game theme music and I still think if enough of a furore was made over it they would change it back.

The "auld" tune came into my head today for some reason. Must be the league getting to the final stages and the sniff of the championship.

See the cricket on BBC haven't changed in years either, updated a little, but still the same tune.

And whatever happened to the Monday Game?

Was great if you where at a match and missed the Sunday game. They used to show extended highlights of the matches that they didn't do that with on the Sunday Game. Usually was Ulster Championship matches back in the bad old days of the 80's, so maybe I'm biased:)

god ye the monday game. ah to be fair with ulster football in the 1980's it was great to the the heavy tackles being put in by all 30, only team that did that was the meath boys

and look where all those heavy tackles got Ulster teams back in the 80s...

and look where all those heavy tackles got Ulster teams back in the 80s...

Heavy tackling played a part as it still does, but also intense rivalry/local derbies. From memory 6 of the 9 teams won Ulster in the 80's and Fermanagh and Cavan reached finals.
It was so hard to get out of the bloody Ulster championship again as Down, Donegal and Derry found in the 80's.

Anyway bring back the Sunday game tune and the Monday game to.

for the one time a year you get to see Louth on it i guess it would hardly make that much a difference? Some result today?!

i enjoy watchin every team on it - from the championship greats of Armagh, Kerry Tyrone - to the "early bloomers" of Donegal, Meath and Mayo who even get their back door games shown on it too - to the minnows of Louth - each way bet for leinster! only have wicklow, wexford and laois (until they face dub or meath or kildare in the final) 20/1 at the mo!

Enjoy your day in the sun Joe

    :);)

The 2004 theme is gone, but in its place is a rather nondescript piece of instrumental music.

Still, Michael Lyster raises hope that the old theme might be back some day...

I didn't really get to listen to the music from the program as I watched the Westmeath-Longford match and first half cavan v down in the pub.

From what I heard, its not nearly as good as the original theme or the 2004-2006 theme.

Hopefully next year, they will revert back to either of the two previous theme music.Does anybody know where I can get my hands on the 2004-2006 theme?

I'd dub this petition as a county board matter ;):p
