Has anyone any ideas about shopping in Newry. Is it worth making a trip to do a food shop once a month or something like that.

If so, what shopping centres are the best

Its worth it for any alcohol(especially spirits), magazines (50% cheaper in Newry) as regards ordinary groceries there is not much difference as far as I have seen. The two shopping centres are the quays and the Buttercrane. The Quays is the newer one and has Debenham, sainsburys, hmv etc. They are only a five minute walk apart anyway so you should try both, probably easier to get parked in the buttercrane as they have a mulitstory carpark

Its great at christmas cause sainsburys always have great deals on but was up the other day and no good specials on beer or anything at all really. If you do a really big shop you should make your money back on the petrol it takes to get up and back and now that they have dundalk town bypassed you can get up in about an hour. I wouldnt go every month id say thats overkill.

I agree with indie - only worth it if buying booze in bulk. There's not much difference in general groceries, but a huge difference with toileteries.

Sainsburys is worth a visit as they have an interesting range of groceries that you don't ever get to see down here (such as Britvic J2O!).

There's also an interesting range of smaller shops along the main street, but they all close on a Sunday.

I go to Newry about 4 times a year - think it's great & well worth a trip. I stock up on pet food (Jolleys on the left hand side on the way in to Newry) drink - there's a good offie just under the bridge on the way into Newry on the left hand side. I find the range of different foods in Sainsburys excellent - lots of things you can't get here.

If you google sainsburystoyou (I think) you can look at the online shopping list & see any offers that they have on. It's good for otc stuff too - pain killers, cough bottles, etc - general first aid type stuff - there is alot more generic non brand availability than there is here - for example a box of ibuprofen for 38p - boots own brand cough bottles for around £2 etc

I also bought a pair of boots in Faith up there that were 88 euro on my visa bill when it came in but were for selling for 115 euro in Dundrum

It costs me about 20 euros in petrol for a return trip and I save much more than that :)

You'll get better value in Dunnes as they give a good rate on the euro to sterling, usually round the 70p mark, were as Sainsbury only give 65p
