Memory Advice

    Hello,

I was hoping to upgrade my memory from pc3200 to something a little faster. Currently I have a 1G installed. I will probably be looking for something on the cheap end of the scale - second hand most likely. However, i know nothing about memory, so advice would be appreciated.

Ideally I'd like to get 2 gigs of the faster stuff, but I don't think I'll be able to afford more than 1Gig. Would there be much performance advantage in better RAM (assuming i'm sticking with a Gig) over what I have? Or should I pick up another Gig of 3200?

    AMD 3700+
    A8N-SLI Deluxe

    Thaks

There wont be any major performance advantage from getting faster memory.

At best the lower latency RAM improves results but by a negligible amount generally and only by a decent amount in specialist applications.

What you will benefit from is getting more RAM and increasing the capacity to 2GB.

So in short get whatever/cheapest DDR400 (PC3200) you can get to take you to 2GB. The A8N has 4 memory slots so could pick up another two 512MB modules to bring the total to 2GB but I would advise getting Crucial RAM for maximum compatibility in case the existing modules don't play nice with other brands.

(Mixing & matching RAM from different makers/brands can bit a of a hit & miss affair if you are not careful)
