Major events-through Board's eyes

I'm not sure where to put this mods and as I type this I'm shivering in fear because I know one of you will come down on me like a ton of witticisms...

    Anyway, I'll brave it...

I was thinking recently about major events that have happened in the world and how they developed on boards.

    For instance:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=30985

Quite an interesting document to look back on in years to come. Wouldn't it have been nice to read such a thread after the outbreak of World War II, or the stock market crash of 29, or when Kennedy was assassinated.

Anyway, maybe there's more threads out there that we can drag back up (by linking, not posting on the old thread).

Or you know, maybe there's no conversation here at all. I'm so damn scared of being given out to...

September 11th was the one that popped into my mind as i read your post. I was in new york when it happened, so its intresting to see how people saw it from here.

Had goosebumps reading that link. Great idea fade2black. Lets hope we don't have anymore tragedies like that. How about the GREAT things that happen too? None springing to mind at the moment though...

Me too, it brought me right back to the day itself. Brilliant idea for a thread.

This one is the Afghan protesters in St Patricks cathedral

Good thread, I can't remember any good events either. I was in an internet cafe in London at the time of 9/11, scary stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

i was in work myself for 9/11 but i went straight home logged on. i was not a part of boards then, actually none of us who have posted here where...

But ye good ider for a thread

EDIT: im amazed the topic ends 3 days after 9/11 and its not locked.
I was on the CnC renegade forum (before the game came out that was my boards community)
and the topic went on for 4 or 5 days before it was locked by Westwood staff

So creepy seeing the reactions from the day as people heard what happened... Weird knowing what we know now and reading that and seeing where it led. Brilliant thread idea.

Scary stuff, I was in work when I got a phone call from a mate to turn on Sky News.
I'll never forget looking across everyones face, their eyes bulging, mouths hanging open and I was the same. There was little to no work done that day. The phones just stopped ringing as if the world had hit a standstill.

This is a terrific idea fade2black, well done.

Might it be an idea for relevant mods to lock these threads so that their historical value doesn't get 'polluted' by people posting to them now, long after the events in question?
Any ideas on how this might be implemented?
Perhaps whoever links them to here might PM the relevant forum mod to tell them about this thread, and ask them to lock the original or amend it if it starts getting fresh traffic.

    Again, fade2black, great idea.

As I'm from Boston it was eery reading that thread. I was at work that morning. I had two friends from Dublin staying with me at the time. They had told me that they were going to take a trip to Manhattan that morning. I couldn't reach them and I was a total wreck! Luckily they had decided to go to Cape Cod instead. The thing that struck me about the thread was how many people said that it all seemed so surreal. That's exactly how I felt that day watching everything unfold on the tv at work. And I couldn't reach anyone from my family for hours. It was awful. And for some reason, as much as I didn't want to watch anymore of it that night, I just couldn't drag myself away from the tv. It was like watching a train wreck. I could see Logan Airport from my kitchen window. It was really eery to see it closed and dark and not hear any planes, other than the military jets that were flying over the city. Surreal.

Oh, and I agree that that thread should be locked.

The dublin riots during the summer perhaps?

    Fantastic idea for a thread.

Maybe the admins/mods could have a forum dedicated to threads such as this? (Something like Comedy Goldmine on SA, but for 'historical' threads)

I was in Thailand when twin towers happened. Mad to see the main town on Koh Samui grind to a halt and all the bars showing CNN instead of blaring music that night.

    Good thread.

Yep... good idea.... A page on the biki might be the best place to stick the links.

Oh and can we not have this turn into a September 11th reminiscing thread? It's bad enough we get them every year in September.

Agreed, that definitely wasn't my intention with this.

I agree. A quick search will reveil where everyone was on the day, God knows theres been enough threads about it since along the lines of "where were you on during September 11th".
Also think that any thread linked in this one should be locked immediately, to stop some twat posting in it and bumping it (happened recently on another forum on Boards).

Good thread though, will add to it when I can think of an event that caused a stirr here.

Will he lead the most powerful nation in the world into invading some country for revenge? Might he start a war over this issue??

And we all thought nesf was crazy.......

    Good thread

Definitely interesting. A weird and real time walk through of the story everyone knows. Bizarre reading all the estimates of death tolls.

Yeah - do you think that's a new-found voyeurism in people themselves, or a result of the 24x7 media saturation of hyped up bad news?

Hmm how many people would need to rate this thread before it would show up?
    i gave it 5.
Is there a block on rating threads in AH?

EDIT: Ah i see the rating thee now but i didnt think it went up to six starts i thought i could only vote 5 for highest

I think it's a bit of both really, although i'm not sure which one is a result of the other.

perhaps our innate curiosity coupled with growing access to information on anything and everything has led to the media picking up on this and exploiting it. alternatively, it could be that more media coverage has led us to become more curious, causing the media to further exploit sometimes meaningless stories and blow them out of proportion. you only need to look at the current big brother fiasco for an example of that.

i hope that made some sense. the brain cells i killed last night must have been important ones.
