Hey all after getting all emotional on the Gaming Nostalgia Thread I decided it was time to emulate that machine I loved so much, my amiga.

Thanks to a fantastic guide by LoGiE I had no problems obtaining the required files and getting it to run. I had run speedball and Shadow of the beast 3 to test it and it seemed to run fine.

My question is what are the best setting to set the configuration for the ram etc. to to get optimum performance fron the emulator because its running quite slowly.

I'm running it all on a HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop (specs here) if thats any help ?

Also i've had a couple of the old error screens appearing for no reason either (Black screen - red error message - click left mouse to continue). Is this because not using the best setting or could there be something wrong with the disk images i'm using ? (.adf)

Any help greatly appreciated, thanks all.

What version of WinUAE are you using? The settings can vary for each game just like some A500 games didn't run on A600 0r A1200. The key is to make sure you have all the kick starts available then set them up like the original machines. Then save the configurations and load the correct one depending what game your playing

    Configs as follows...

    A500 had a 68000 cpu and 512k Ram,
    A600 had a 68000 - 68020 1- 2MB of Ram.
    A1200 had a 68EC020 and 2Mb of Ram
You should use the FPU processor if the game uses 3d like flight sims for example

Your PC seems to be more then capable of running the emulator so I can't see that being the reason for the slow down so it;s defo a config issue.

I'll get you started once you give me the version your running and the game your trying to play:)

Thanks LoGiE, ill set up a seperate configuration for each machine, I think you could be right about the wrong games on the wrong machines because I had Rick Dangerous running on the 12000 configuration you suggested but Turrrican 2 wouldnt run at all.
Ill test the games on the various settings and let you know how I get on. Thanks again.

I recommend looking for a program called "lemonade".
Its a GUI frontend that you install after WINUAE and use instead of WNUAE!
You just point to your games folder and select the game your require.

It automatically configures WINUAE and starts it up for you.

I only play Amiga games casually so this takes the hassle out of configuring WINUAE and saves a lot of time!!

Thanks damiennolan Just downloaded it now, ill give it a go when I get home. What kickstarts would I need to run with this - Ive got kick13.rom and kick31.rom. I see theres loads of others around too should these be enough to run lemonade correctly ?

yeah kickstart 1.3 covers amiga 500/600 games and 3.1 covers amiga 1200 games so i reckon it should be enough! (i stand to be correct about though)

When you install and start lemonade for the first time you will be asked to point to your kickstart files. It will list all possible kickstarts that are out there so you can see for yourself but as I already mention you should have enough to get you going.

One other thing, lemonade requires you to connect to the internet to download a small database file.

If you have no internet connection at home, send me a PM and i'll be able to help you out ;)

That's an excellent frontend damiennolan! It didn't pick up all my games though and I have pretty much everyone of them so I think I'll have to rename a lot of them :( It must not use TOSEC.

    It's great alright!!

I think it recognizes TOSEC or GoodTools, not sure which one.
Don't forget to download the screenshots packs for Lemonade also.
You can then see an image for each game.

I don't know about you guys, but do you ever notice that when emulating an A1200 with the standard specs it hogs 100% cpu resources! I use Whdload for many games under workbench 3.1. However - I set the chipset timing speed to match an A500 and the cpu load heads back to a cooler 8% cpu load (single digits anyway). This is fine most times since the game emulated is 80% of time uses ocs/ecs. If I find the game slows because of this (usually only the AGA specific games) I use the slider underneath "match a500 speed" to get a happy medium.
