    Hi all...

Just looking at some memory cards on Amazon and noticed that some cards have "Type H", "Type M" or "Type M/H" in the description. What does this mean?

Also, am I right in assuming that it make's no difference if you camera is an Olympus and your card's a Fuji and vice versa?

    Many thanks,

    Ip.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

    Hi,

The type H, type M is to do with the speed and capacity of the cards, some of the older cameras (and card readers) can't handle these newer type h,m,etc. cards (check your manual).

Whether its Fuji, Olympus or anyone else makes v. little difference. However, Olympus have a 'panorama' mode in their point and shoot cameras which provides an on screen guide for shooting the pano (also locks focus and exposure) and some proprietary software for stitching it. This panorama mode only works if you're using an Olympus card ... but if you have an Oly camera, then chances are you have at least a small capactiy Oly XD card which should be enough for the occasional panorama. Of course, it should be possible to do all this manually without the preset mode anyway.

Incidentally, 7dayshop do good prices on these if Amazon won't deliver to Ireland — £15.99 (+£3.95 flat rate shipping) for a 1GB 'H' type Fuji card.

Actually, I was very surprised to see it a couple of quid cheaper on Amazon! Mind you, I don't know what their p&p would have been...

The Type M card uses Multi Level Cell (MLC) architecture to achieve a theoretical storage capacity of up to 8 GB. As of August 2006, Type M cards are available in sizes from 256 MB to 2 GB. However, the Type M suffers slower read-write speeds than the original cards.

The Type H card, offers higher data rates than Type M cards (theoretically as much as 3 times faster). As of 2006, Type H cards are only available in 256MB, 512 MB and 1 GB capacities. Olympus says that its Type H xD cards support special "picture effects" when used in some Olympus cameras.

    Taken from Wikipedia.

    If it's a M/H card I'd assume it's a high capacity, high speed card but don't quote me :)
