    http://kotaku.com/gaming/ps3/sony-screws-ireland-on-ps3-pricing-229215.php

Game site Eurogamer reports that the Irish version of the PLAYSTATION 3 site is reporting that the upcoming 60GB version will be available at launch for EURO 629.99. The "cheaper" 20GB version, retailing at EURO 529.99, will not be available. For shock value, here's that in US dollars: $814.25 and $684.97.

And for those keeping score, Sony announced at last year's E3 that the PS3 would be priced at EURO 499/599. Before jumping to the snide "This is Living" and doom-saying, from what I vaguely remember, though, Florian bitched about Microsoft overcharging the Irish for the Xbox 360 as well.

    Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

Sooo where does the blame lie more? Over priced machine, or rip off Ireland?

And if the Wii launch was anything to go by...expect that price to be rounded up to 650 by Game and Gamestop etc.

well i don't care i have little or no interest in a ps3 burnout 5 looks like the only title of interest and thats on the 360 as well so a mate of mine owns one of them. I want the ps3 to flop because i like pcs and sony need a good kick because playstations are overrated

Sony officially today announced the prices for the PS3 in ireland. We have to pay 30 euro more than any other country cause of our stupid 21% tax.

    Full story is herehttp://www.nextgenireland.com/ps3news.html

That works out at 812 dollars

Thats a total rip off. Get a wii and an xbox 360 for the same price

anyone know why it is more expensive here???

Surely the rest of europe should be getting charged the same, well at least Britain anyway (obviously in sterling)

I doubt Sony are directly to blame on this one although i wouldn't be surprised if they were, the way things have been going for them and all.

    still not buyin one though

What about that recycling charge for electronic products?

    Thats Europe wide afaik.

I think the obvious thing would be for consumers to boycott the product and show them that they cant **** people around like that. However, there are going to be people who will buy it in the shops here reguardless of price, and Sony know that. They are going to sell them here and thats really all that matters to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Who the **** is going to pay that? Seriously, will anyone here buy one? You're looking at €650 by the time GAME and the like round it up, then another €150 for a couple of games, so €800 for a videogame console with two games? It's lunacy, I just hope people tell them where to shove it.

It's not like the 360 is exactly cheap either, but you can get one with four games and an extra joypad in Xtravision for almost half that.

What about that recycling charge for electronic products?

Which is a tenner not 30 notes. It could be 630 for the whole of Europe. However come launch expect to pay close to 700 from Game, Smyths, Gamestop and the other usual suspects. Still compared to what the japanese and Americans are paying the European price is a complete joke.

That's it, I'm definitely not getting one now!

A year ago I was tempted to get one but with mess up after mess up on Sony's part, I'm definitely now not getting one.

I won't get one on principle alone. Sony are really arrogant if they think they can sell at this price.

It's bad enough gamers like ourselves who know the score with the price, but imagine a clueless parent strolling into a shop, getting this for little Jimmy or Mary and finding out the price was at least 2 to 3 times what they would have guessed!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭netman

I think parents need to learn to say no to their spoilt little brats :)

Why would little Jimmy or Mary need to have a PS3 on launch day?
It's only because some other kid in their school is bragging about getting one.

Besides, for those who are really desperate enough to spend 600+ on a console, why not have a look at online retailers? Komplett were always cheaper than Game, Smyths etc, no need to queue or deal with irrate kids kicking and screaming.

Since the UK price is going to be £425 (~€647.49), we'll definately be charged €650 in the likes of GAME, HMV, Virgin and any other UK store.

I wonder how much games will be in store :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

Ps3= overpriced failure, honestly most of the games wont be that much better on it cause there gonna have to port it to the 360 and wii anyway.

The only thing in the 360's way now is the problem with it constantly breaking down.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,386 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The excuse is the VAT rate is Ireland which is bull since we do have a high VAT rate but there are countries in Europe with a higher tax rate.

The real reason: The Irish have the highest PS uptake per capita of any country. Now bend over and take it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,066 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Will it not just be cheaper to buy them online from mainland europe once the initial rush is over?

    My thoughts exactly.

The thing at this pricepoint, Playstation is becoming a more elite, luxury "brand".

Most parents with any bit of sense will say no to their kids, and get either a 360, Wii, or good package deal on a PS2 for them instead.

A lot of casual gamers will say "f**k that" and stick with what they have. Moderate gamers may like either the 360 or Wii, or perhaps the combo.

Only the die-hards with plenty of disposable income will be queueing for this.

And Playstation used be considered the casual gamer, for the masses console.

Senior Retail Sources also reckon that you won't be able to buy the 20GB version in Britain, as Sony has confirmed will be the case in Ireland - at least for a while after launch.

now we got a bonfire going.

Usually my friend ProjectMayham comes in here on defence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,761 ✭✭✭✭Winters

tbh though, if you were going to buy one there is no point wasting money on the 20GB version, you are much better off to get the bigger 60GB version with all its extras.

true but isnt it possible to put any 2 5' sata 150 hard disk into the PS3?

If I did get a ps3 (which I cant cause I cant afford it and there is nothing to intice me yet) I wouldnt mind paying a 100 euro less and waiting for the hard disks to drop in price and pick up a bigger sized hard disk when I can afford it.

Thats how I'd treat the PS3 if its getting so expensive...like a PC I'd start looking for ways to cut out the garbage I dont want that they are pushing on me.

Well there was exactly the same uproar when Microsoft did exactly the same thing by upping the Irish price from their original European price and had exactly the same tax excuse. The Wii is retailing for €270 in most Irish stores(I think argos are the exception) despite it's European price of €250.

So it's really no different, just the starting price was higher to begin with, but then we already knew that. Ireland does have higher transport costs etc. associated with it, and we spend more on games than anyone else in Europe, Sony aren't the only company that's copped on to that.

If you don't agree then don't buy it. Everyone who's claiming to be outraged had already made their minds up anyway, it's just another excuse to bash Sony. I remember when the PS2 was IR£400, it didn't hurt it in the end. By the time 90% of people buy one it'll be a lot cheaper than it's current price.

Yeah this 'premium' idea with the new consoles is really a little irritating.
But that price really is ridiculous. At 630 yo yos the PS3 really needs a killer app fast.

You would have a top of the range PC for that price .
Only a fool would buy the PS3.
If the kids start complaining take off your belt.

Yes, but the 60GB one features SD/XD/MS/CM etc. card readers and also WiFi. The 20GB one does not. There is more in the price difference then just hard disc size.

As the economy over here is doing well, it seems as though stores are using this to ripp us off with higher prices then our friends on the mainland. Its a killer but thats life. The way to get around that would be to buy your stuff from online stores and save money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

it's just another excuse to bash Sony

    but its so damn easy!

The difference between the upscaling of this price to the upscaling of the Wii (not sure about the 360 was in UK for its launch) is that Nintendo said the RRP is 250, the stores themselves pushed it up to 270. Here Sony is saying the RRP is 630...which (as I said in OP) leaves game etc to push up the price EVEN MORE like they did with the Wii. Sony have already upped the price and we still have to see how much further the stores will push it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

komplett would be the last place to check, im sure i read that a lot of ppl didnt get their wii's off them for xmas.

Anyways, the sony defence force will be here soon," sure the xbox 360 costs 400 euro, plus 200 euro for the hd-dvd drive, plus 100 euro for the wireless adpater plus plus....... the ps3 is a flippin bargain!"

The casual gamer isnt gonna be checking forums like these or game websites( as there the only places i have heard anything about the planned price), so there gonna be in for a shock when they start to see the ps3 price being advertised in the weeks before its released. Ppl say bla bla cost £400 when it came out, but i doubt as many ppl bought consoles at launch then as they do now and so a lot of ppl would have bought it a lot cheaper a year after.

While I would be interested in the Linux capabilities, and what could be achieved with it and the PS3 dash, (i.e. Home-brew, etc.) I think someone needs a good kick up the hole for this sort of rip off!

I work in a game retailer and I'm pretty sure for your 700 euros your getting the 60 GB PS3 and A Sony Brand Game, but that was when it was being released in November could change for better or worse

Where I'm workin its 200 for the HD-DVD Drive, Wireless Adaptor is 80 euro and you can get the 360 with a game from a list for 410 or for 470 with any game, a second wireless controller and Project Gotham Racing and Arcade Unplugged. I think the real tester will be HD-DVD v Blue Ray, I can't see both of them co-existing, buzz is that some Movie Distributors will be siding with Blu Ray and others with HD-DVD, so one or the other could become obsolete, at least with the 360 the Drive is external..I have spoken :P

We're a nation of tolerators. Sony can charge what they want, people will still buy it. There is no people power in this country, hence the rip off culture.

Dont believe me? Check out the aer lingus baggage charge which kicked off today. Loads of people moaning about it on tv and radio today. How many complaints did Aer Lingus receive today about it? (confirmed on the news today)

    0

So when ps3 comes out and you dont like the price, dont buy it. Im very disappointed at this price news. Im gonna invest in an xBox instead. I was holdin out for ps3 but sod that!

Finally. Today is the day. I've been waiting for some time for it. The day that I buy a PC which cost less then console (even if it is a prediction!).

Jesus Christ, I mean... 650 notes for a console?!

I think when they said "Next Generation" they meant it would be *ready* for the next generation and that only they would be able to afford it after years of saving. Sony have just lost it, makes my mind up I'm buying an XBox...

    DeV.

I have a 360 and not wanting to get involved in flaming but with my 360 i also got the wifi card and hd dvd drive which was 680 in total...

So the argument that the 360 is cheap is not necessarily true once you add a few bits and pieces

Anyone willing to fork out over 600 euro for a PS3 is not going to worry about the 30 euro tax ffs.

Anyone know what the average price a game for the thing is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

I was going to post a thread about this earlier when I seen it announced on eurogamer, but this board was going mad slow so I didn't bother.

This is pretty much what I expected, I was thinking I was going to have to pay €650 for the premium model so I'm quite happy.
I think the best news is that we are also only getting the premium model at launch. Now there is no chance of me ending up only being offered the basic one.

Although I can see a problem here for anyone who has planned to get the basic model all along. But I'm incredibly happy with all the news today.
March launch confirmed (Although no exact date given), premium model only at launch for Ireland, and the price doesn't bother me.
    So it's all good.

Is ther anything porn can't do?

I'm not surprised at all at the price increase (expected) but I'm completely outraged that the Japanese get a reduction and we get and increase. Not tha I was going to rush out and buy one anyway but this really does put a sour note on the PS3......

I mean what can this do better that my wii and 360 can't? By all accounts the on line service is sh*te, the motion control is supposed to be fidlly and nothing as good compared to the wii controller (and no rumble feature) and the cross-platform games will be no better then the 360. Unless they have 2 or 3 killers apps, and I mean AAAA titles then I'll sit this one out.

Porn or no porn, it is always the format with the better acronym that wins.
Exhibit A : VHS & Betamax. VHS - catchier acronym. You Winner!
Exhibit B : DVD & erm... Laserdisc / UMD . DVD - better acronym. Winners Don't Use Drugs!
Based on this logic (i.e. Phoenix Wright logic) HD-DVD will win.
Imagine saying "I'm going up to the shop for a Blu-Ray". Sounds wrong.

More like €700 as all shops will be selling them as bundles.

    All I can say is:

    a) I'm not getting one
    b) anyone thinking of it, please, PLEASE be sensible. Think about it!

This is correct, and is the reason I'm pretty sure Blu Ray is gonna lose this battle. :) Sony has made mistake after mistake with the PS3. One of the biggest ones imo, is that they've taken away options and forced their High Definition solution down your throat, whilst Microsoft has done nothing but give more options. I've read that at the moment, MS still think that both HDDVD and Blu Ray could possibly fail which is why they've given the option of the HDDVD player as an add-on.

Sony jacking the price up for the addition of a Blu Ray player(that CANNOT upscale) is just stupid imo. I'm advising everyone I know not to go near the PS3 for a long time, and not just because of the price. Here are the main reasons:

    - If HDDVD loses out in this format battle, Microsoft will simply just bring out an add-on Blu Ray drive(they can and if needed, they will;)). What will Sony do if Blu Ray loses this battle of formats? (this is now VERY possible...)

    - A less mentioned point is that current HDDVD and Blu-Ray drives have lower peak data rates than a 12X DVD drive, meaning that load times increase when running games from a HDDVD/Blu-Ray drive, all other things being held constant. PS3 games can "install" to the HD to alleviate this problem, but that solution doesn't seem too elegant (will you have to manage games' install files at 3-5GB apiece when the 20/60GB drive fills up?)

    - The PS3 at this time has no way of taking a 720p-native game and showing it at any resolution above that. If your television doesn't support 720p, the PS3 is not a good buy if you want high-definition gaming. This is gonna suck for a lot of people e.g the guys that don't care about a HD TV or what resolutions their HD TV supports.

But never mind all of this. What about little Johnny casual gamer that doesn't give a shíte about gaming and watching movies in high definition? Blu what now?

    P.S
    I AM NOT A FANBOY.

Sony have stopped porn producers using blu ray outright, havent they?
Anyway, i honestly cant fathom how Sony expect the ps3 to take off at this price. Seriously, 650 for the console and say, at 70 a pop per game, that another 140 for 2 games, unless you got for a bundle (and lets face it that wont be much cheaper, and the bundled games usually suck) youre talking the guts of 1000 euro, for a ****ing PLAYSTATION??
Theyve effectively killed any chance they had of getting Mr. & Mrs. pee ess tew is bleedin rapa its got WIKKID GRAFFIX (aka the 'casual' gamer)from buying thier machine. Theyll price themselves out of the console race altogether at this point.

as bad as sony are, MS are no angels either. Remember the original promos for xbox 360? "the only entertainment unit you need in your living room!"
