We are working for a large chain store. In the past few weeks the manager on duty has to check our private locker and car at the end of our shift. Is this legal or have we the right to refuse?

I think it depends on your contract. If you signed allowing the search then there is nothing you can do.

I think that personal lockers are still company property and can be searched, generally speaking your car is private and shouldn't be searched.

However, I worked for a large department store many years ago and when we left at the staff entrance every night a security would search our bags. That included ladies hand bags and shopping bags.

The company that I work for now has to scan you everytime we leave, for a break, a cigarette or when we are finishing. They also check our bags etc.

I would think: locker = OK, it's a company locker
searching your person and bags on teh way out = reasonable enough, provided there's an official policy in place regarding this. (For example, my employer requires a member of both management and security to be present for staff checks, and if the employee requests it, another employee / union rep).

Car = No way, I don't think this is permissable unless its in your contract, its a major invasion of privacy IMHO.

    oh, and IANAL, of course.
