Cant get CD-RW to work

    Hi all,

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 pc, and it came with a Sony CDRW. I upgraded the OS to Windows XP, service pack 2.
Now, in 'My Computer' it doesn't show the drive at all.

The drive is receiving power, as the tray opens when I press the button. Also, in device manager, it appears under the CD/CDC drives section, it is listed under the correct model name, but with a yellow '!' beside it.

I tried updating the driver, and uninstalling and re-installing it but without any luck.

I then removed the drive physically, and replaced it with a HP 9100 CDRW. But this is the very same. It appears correctly named in device manager, with the yellow '!', but that is it. I downloaded a new driver, but it didn't work.

I also downloaded a new BIOS update for my PC from Dell, but when I boot from the floppy, it doesn't work.

Any ideas? Everything else on the machine is perfect...

Dodgy IDE cable or controller maybe? Try a new IDE cable perhaps, or try setting the drive as the Slave drive on the same cable as the hard drive (Primary IDE) and see if there is any difference.

Also try removing the actual IDE controller from the device manager as well that might reset it when Windows re-installs the driver.

You may also want to attempt to install the Intel chipset drivers.

    Oki Doki,

I tried your suggestions, )'cept the bit about the chipset drivers, cause I don't understand that bit!) but it didn't work.

However, I decided to install Nero (via a shared CD drive on our network) and now the PC is recognising the drive and happily burning CD's?????

The chipset drivers are drivers for the motherboard in some cases it may help in other it may not but it is generally a good idea to install them anyway.

As for Nero well by guess is it did a system check and found whatever was causing the problem and reset or repaired it.

    Lovely,

    Thanks for the info.

I'll look into these chipset drivers. I suppose it is good practise to keep it all up to date.
