Ok, so this is a pretty strange kind of request but I have a lot of different compilations and live shows that do not have track details online. I do however have these tracklists in text files and word docs.

Is there any program or tag editor that can take in track name lists from a text file like this:
    7. Queen Jane Approximately
    8. 'Til I Fell In Love With You
    9. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
    10. New Morning
    11. Highway 61 Revisited
    12. Man In The Long Black Coat
    13. Honest With Me

and tag them as being tracks 7 - 13 with those track names. Incidentally the file names are normally something nondescript like bd211106d1.mp3 so the file info can't be imported that way either.

I have used tried tagging these in Windows Explorer, Media Monkey, Winamp, WMP and iTunes and can't find an option in there like this at all.

Any experiences or suggestions would be appreciated as i literally have hundreds of these untagged mp3s now, and would love if my zen could play them with track names. Thanks.

Not sure I understand exactly, but try LupasRename (freeware). It can rename files using an MP3's ID3 info, as well as add sequential numbering to the start or end of filenames (and lots more!)

    It is what it's.

I knew this would be tough to explain!

Basically what's happening is that I'm downloading live shows from the live music archive or from dimeadozen.org an these usually come in flac format, and when i convert them to mp3 they do not have any tags or id3 file information, i just have a bunch of untagged files with names like:
    bd211106d1t1.mp3
    bd211106d1t2.mp3
    bd211106d1t3.mp3
    bd211106d1t4.mp3
    bd211106d1t5.mp3
    bd211106d1t6.mp3
    bd211106d1t7.mp3
    bd211106d1t8.mp3
    bd211106d2t1.mp3
    bd211106d2t2.mp3
    bd211106d2t3.mp3
    bd211106d2t4.mp3
    bd211106d2t5.mp3

the good thing is the torrent usually comes with a text file like so:

    1. tuning/intro
    2. Kissing the Lipless
    3. Know Your Onion
    4. Girl Inform Me
    5. Mine's Not a High Horse
    6. The Celibate Life
    7. Turn On Me #
    8. When I Goosestep>
    9. Pressed In a Book
    10. Those Bold City Girls
    11. Phantom Limb #
    12. 'New Slang' ****ups
    13. Saint Simon
    14. Turn a Square
    15. Young Pilgrims

So what I need to do is take the file names from this .txt file and get them into individual file tags. Now i normally dont mind doing this but i downloaded a compilation with 100 tracks in it and a corresponding list in a text file of 100 songs, and i'm wondering if there's a way to link the two. Is this explained better now?

Incidentally, here's an Applescript (I don't use Macs much so dont really know how these work) which does pretty much exactly what I want, dont suppose anyone can suggest a PC equivalent process I could go through?

    imptxt2.gif

this is basically what i need to get happening... a text file with file names to go into mp3 tag info (in this case shown by iTunes).

Well im fairly sure WMP looks up tags automatically, i know if i stick in one of my cd's it names all the songs automatically. Iv never tried it with my mp3's because im lazy.

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately these are all compilations and live shows that do not have official releases or any details online, so WMP looks but doesn't find anything.

Incidentally has anyone tried out "tag & rename", i see it mentioned in different places and am wondering if it's worth trying out.

Mp3Tag maybe? It supports the ability to import tags from a textfile ("Convert -> Textfile - Tag"). Pick out your text file and specify the text format, e.g. as per your example:

    %track%. %title%

You'll also need to ensure the number of lines in the text file match the number of mp3's your attempting to tag. The import tool works reasonably well for me although i would recommend you update the file in small batches (rather than attempt the whole hog :)).
