Pilates Questions

My osteopath has recommended that I try pilates to improve my core strength and flexibility to prevent constant back problems. I have a few questions which I hope people can help me with.

    1. Would it be better to take part in an organised class or to do it on my own?
    2. If a class is better can anyone recommend one in the Carlow/Kilkenny area?
    3. Are classes mainly populated by women? I am a 30yr old man who would be self conscious in a class full of women only.
    4. If working on my own can anyone recommend a book/dvd to use?

    1. To start I'd recommend you take part in a class as there are small corrections that an instructor can recognise and correct that you cannot get from a book. After doing a course you can decide whether you are confident enough to continue on your own.

    2. I teach in the Carlow town area, there are two other instructors in the area too. Most of the hotels in Kilkenny run Pilates classes (some of which are open to non-members) if you want to enquire.

    3. My matwork classes are mainly populated by women but there are a few guys (they come from a few areas such as army, cross country athletics, rugby, GAA). Thats in my matwork classes. Saying that Pilates takes a fair bit of concentration so nobody takes any notice of what anyone else is doing.

However I do have a guy's only core class - it's pretty intense and uses matwork, medicine balls and the gym ball. It is based on the Pilates principles but is not pure pilates. I'd need to talk to you to see whether it may be too intense for you.

    4. Book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pilates-Complete-System-Michael-King/dp/1840006900/sr=8-6/qid=1168974559/ref=sr_1_6/203-0278362-1282358?ie=UTF8&s=books
It is a nice starter book

    DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Classical-Pilates-Technique-Complete-Intermediate/dp/B000069YWP/sr=8-1/qid=1168974737/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-2732550-6834448?ie=UTF8&s=dvd
It takes it from modified basic to advanced
