Best Ps2 game ever

It seems every year someone on boards.ie sets up a thread that talks about games from the year they just past. This thread is not that different. Because the ps3 is going to replace the ps2 in march i thought it would be a good idea to talk about the games on ps2 from birth to now. So as you can see it doesn’t matter what year it is as long as it's ps2. To get the ball rolling I guess I'll start.

My favorite series on the ps2 was Ace Combat, GTA and Burnout

My fave stuff on the Ps2 has been GTA III and Vice City, Metal Arms, Ico and Silent Hill 2, I knocked a lot of craic out of those games in the last few years, and just to add one more, I was blown away by God Of War, wasn't expecting to like it so much yet it was incredible.
Here's hoping that by 2012 we'll have so many great games to look back on in the PS3s lifetime.

Wow there's a lot of competition for that title.

Tempting as it is to pick something a little less mainstream like Katamari or SotC, my vote would have to go with San Andreas. Great characters, great dialogue, an endless sandbox of gameplay, the contrasts of intense battles and relaxing rides through the countryside, San Andreas is still the pinnacle of what can be done in a computer game to create a variety of emotional responses in a completely unscripted way.

Honorable mentions for FFX, GT4, BG&E, Fahrenheit, PES(any one), Burnout 3, MGS 2 & 3, Suikoden III & V, TOCA Race Driver series and hopefully FFXII and Okami this year :)

there's a lot of great stuff that came out on PS2. it's hard to pick one game. but if i'm talking about impressions (as in, what do i still remember being awesome to play) it'd be a toss between GTA:SA, killzone (i always take slack for name-dropping that), burnout & freedom fighters.

    :horror:

Not a PS2 game as such (since it was a Dreamcast game originally), but the best inception of it was on PS2 (since I could have it in glorious pseudo-5.1 through the optical out) and to my mind the best bar none for combining innovative presentation, gameplay, sound and effect synergy etc. : Rez

    Grand Theft Auto Series
    Pro Evolution Soccer Series

Lots of classics, but personally I'd have to go with Silent Hill 2, probably one of my favourite games of all time.

I too would have to give it to silent hill 2, i dont even think i would have GTA:SA up in my top five too be honest driving through empty wilderness just annoyed me and imo they tried too hard, GTA:VC now is a diff story and would be trying to nudge silent hill of the top spot, Res evil 4 would also be up there except i played it on Gamecube first so the PS2 was a let down. Honourable mention should also go to ico, beyond good and evil and the original timesplitters that on got on stephens day, the day after i got my console coz that was some night, memories

Ico.......for pure game design and imagination.....SOTC is a great game as well, just not quite as fresh and innovative (and may be pushing the PS2 a little to far technically)..
Game designs which are almost Nintendo level of quality..

Ico for me too followed closely by Silent Hill 2

For me it has to be Gradius V. Probably the best example of a 2D shmup ever made. Gorgeous to look at, great sound, very accessible but long enough to be a massive challenge. Pity it was ignored because of the 2D gameplay. It pisses all over GTA and it's ilk.

Next would be FFX, excellent game with a fabulous story.

After that it's rythm action at it's best: Gitaroo Man! Deceptively simple, incredibly short but with hidden challenge and its a game you will play over and over again.

Honourable mentions to Suikoden III and V, Silent Hill 2, Zone of Enders 2, MGS3, SotC, Ico, GoW, DMC3, Grandia 2, PoP series, Contra: Shattered Soldier, Kingdom Hearts and the classics that are bound to be in the pile of games I haven't touched yet.

Wow, lot of support for Silent Hill 2 - maybe i should play that copy i've had lying around for the past three months.

Pro Evo, We Love Katamari, the Hitman games, God of War.

Resi 4 (probably - cube game was near perfect).

GTA, DMC and MGS never really did it for me, good as they are.

I must say, in additon to the games I have already mentioned, I love Fantavision, Sonys tech demo turned launch game, now I know many folk hate it but I feel, as chill out titles go it is up there with Rez, all be it less intense.
I enjoyed StarWars Starfighter when it came out, reckon it was the buzz about the new Star Wars movies but it was still a blast.
And still many to come, Okami, FFXII and God of War II, who needs next gen?
