Market Research for Maintenance Company - How do I go about it?

    Hi,

I intend to start a new company which will be a Property Maintenance and Repairs Company. Our services will cover all residential/domestic maintenance, such as painting & decorating, gardening, electrical services, mechanical services.

I have done some initial investigation with friends and family, which has been positive, but I am sceptical about whether they are biased in there answers.

I'd appreciate any information on what is the best way to get unbiased market research (without spending a fortune?!).

Is knocking on doors (literally) an acceptable form of acquiring this information, or is there a better way to go about it?

Would appreciate your suggestions, or even your comments on if you think there is a market for domestic/residential maintenance that can cover broad range of services.

    Thanks,
    Figs

Stick a few flyers through letter boxes and see how many calls you get?

    Thanks Fintan.

Yup, will definitely do a leaflet run, but I also want to try to ask questions as to what services would be most valued, or how often in the last five years have you employed someone for home improvements? etc...

Guess I can do this when I go to do the job...

After 10 years in research to a greater or lesser degree, here's my advice: some things don't need researching. Your idea is clear, potentially in demand and potentially lucrative. Skip step 1-10 on research and move onto the next steps in corporate strategy: 1) what business are you in? 2) how do you wish to compete? For me, a company based on Mr Handyman in the States (www.mrhandyman.com) would be a winner, distancing itself from the unreliable "man in a van" operations that we all distrust. Focus on people who are considering selling their homes, this allows them to get immediate return on their investment in you. Call to people with "For Sale" signs up and impress upon them how a few hundred spent with you can make them thousands... And don't fall into the trap of calling to the ones that are dirty: they won't spend the money. Ironically, call to the tidier ones as they will value the extra touch you can bring. Hope this gives you the confidence to proceed..

    Thanks for the encouragement OKellyc.

The wheels are in motion, and hope to be trading shortly.
