Completely non-photography related, but I was wondering about how/where people get their user names? Some are pretty obvious, but others, well let's just say they are not as obvious...

to get the ball rolling, when I was younger, playing football on the street required that you 'be' at least 1 professional player...I was always Emilio Butragueno, formerly of Real Madrid and Spain. Cambogueno stuck as a nickname, but unlike The Vulture, I wasn't any use at football, so I think there was a wee bit of irony in there....

I got the nickname Ned Kelly from the lads in my bike club a few years back for some ... unscrupulous behaviour on a bike. It's stuck every since. Oh, and I was born in 78.

Calina, remnants of a past life as a singer songwriter stage name. Never quite made the big time.

In true internet fashion I got my nick from Star Wars. Had it since I was 14, I'm 21 now and I swear I'm not still a nerd....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

    I like Fajitas

The Gtr part of my name that I use elsewhere comes from my liking of cars, and when I used to own anyone online in any racing game...

I was travelling all over Europe in my previous job.

I was nicknamed "Mike goes everywhere" and eventually it became "Mike anywhere"

I thought about "...the chick-magnet net-handle" 'Wampa-One' but decided it wasnt pretentious enough. So I stole the name from a character in the movie 'the medusa touch' (as it was more pretentious and over-dramatic - in a cult sci fi kind of way).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,196 ✭✭✭PaulieC

    queerhawks? what are they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Better than sh*tehawks, but still worse than your average human.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

it's a term of endearment... or at least it is when I say it...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fenster

    Hawks...that are queer?

I'm known variously as Fenster or Bhalash. The first came from the film the Usual Suspects, as I have a speech impediment (watch it and you'll understand), and Bhalash came from the character of The Balash from the game world of Legend of the Five Rings. He was nutter who wanted to destroy the world.

    So in summary
I am the misspelt Mori God of War

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

Started using it on MSN chat rooms in 2001. Couldn't think of anything so I called myself Jackeen but with cooler spelling = Jaqian :) Discovered then that it was pretty unique on the net and stuck with it. Google "jaqian" and you'll find over 90% of the crap is mine :)

Since I had to pick a name when signing up, just picked a movie character from an old old favorite. Even tho he aint the one saying the infamous 'Badges? We dont need no stinking badges' line, just gotta love ol bogey :)

Knew I knew it from somewhere, Treasure of the Sierra Madre!

Might aswell add my 2 cents, or something like that!!!

Back in 2003 I was in college in dun laoghaire and got the dart every morning, the construction was being done at the time, I saw a sign with Trip hazard on it and thought it sounded like a character from an 80 cop show, "Agent Trip Hazard, is a man on the egde" "Trip hazard is a loose cannon" or the like. Then started using it as a log in name online. come to think of it, this was the first site that I used it on. and there are many more sites where you'll find Trip Hazard, chances are its me.

BTY, I only heard there was a band named that much afterwards so its nothing to do with them:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

A440 is the 440 Hz tone that serves as the standard for musical pitch. A440 is the musical note A above middle C (A4)

Being a techy/musician/audio engineer i think that speaks for itself!!

its also a really nice note to sing

My tag when I started playing team fortress classic on the net. Seemed as good as any, although I got a fair bit of abuse for that particular name. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 494 ✭✭paudie

Do I really need to explain?
Not sure why, I never really use a nick unless Paudie is already taken, and that's pretty rare.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭trooney

trooney: Ancient Norse god of laser pointers and also a poison used by some indigenous tribes of New Guinea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,648 ✭✭✭bp_me

    me - me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,319 ✭✭✭sineadw

Er... mine is an anagram of a tribe of pygmy cannibals I met travelling in the Congo a few years back, who then gave me the cure for cancer and honorary chiefdom. And NOT just my name at all, because that would be boring.

    Ahem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

Derived from my name years ago when you needed under 8 characters as a unix username and that was your email address, before firstname.lastname@company.com became such a standard. Easier to spell than my real-life name, anyway, so I tend to get my various workplaces to set up jlang@company.com as an alias and use that.
