Have booked a trip to Paris as an anniversary present for my parents (both sixtyish) and am looking for some advice on which would be the best "arrondisement" for them to have accomodation. They would like to be fairly central but have no problem using the public transport. Want to have easy access to the places of interest; nice restaurants; and shopping. Any recommendations on hotels also appreciated.

If I was going I would stay in the Opera district. Good metro connections, plenty shopping, a few Irish pubs and plenty sightseeing close by.

I stayed in the 15th last june - the hotel was a 5 minute walk from the Dupleix metro station, which is on line 6. That area is also close to the Eiffel Tower, and there's a good few hotels around there, as well as restaurants, bars etc. It's mostly residential, and fairly quiet.

The metro is great, from the nearest stop it was about 5 minutes to Place Charles de Gaulle/Etoile (Arc de Triomphe).

The hotel I stayed in was Campanile Tour Eiffel (Campanile is a farily popular French hotel chain). Good price, clean rooms although the room was a bit small.

Your folks can get a metro pass when they arrive, I think it was €30 for 5 days unlimited travel, do a search for the Metro website & it'll have all the info. That'll make it easy to get around.

Was in Paris last November and stayed up around Grand Boulevards(metro) area, it's between Opera and Gare l'Est. It was ok, but went to the Marais area near Bastille in the evenings, which is a really nice area full of interesting shops and restaurants. It's very central and will be my choice for further stays in Paris.

Out of the 20 areas the only ones where they may feel uncomfortable would be the nothern parts of 75018 and 75019. Anywhere from 75001-75009 are just fine being close to the heart of the city though 07 tends to be a little boring really.
