Wiimote battery drain during standby

Has anyone else noticed that the wiimotes continuously drain battery power? I stopped playing my Wii for over three days, when I tried to use them again the batteries were completey dead. Last time I used them they were working fine. These were the batteries supplied by Nintendo.

I noticed that leaving my remtoe sitting for a while that it lost its connection and had a message on-screen. Moving the remote subsequently re-activated it but yes I too noticed that a remote suddenly had no battery power one day.
