Ferry: Rosslare - Cherbourg (E96, 16 hours?)

    Hey folks,

I'm looking for advice on getting the ferry from Rosslare to Cherbourg.

Me and a friend are going interrailing this summer (sadly not going to Thailand anymore!), and I'd like to start at the D-day beaches, because they'd be interesting to see, and because they're in the north of Europe anyway, so we can start to head south from there.

Getting the ferry to Cherbourg seems like a decent idea (at the moment!) because it appears to be the closest port (air or otherwise) to the beaches, that is served by an Irish transport company.

Irish Ferries are giving me a quote of E96, and are AFAIK saying that the journey will take 16 hours!!!

Does that seem right to yourselves? I'm not familiar with ferries.

Also does anyone know a better idea (cheaper, quicker) to get from Ireland to Normandy?

Sounds about right - take a night crossing, bring a sleeping bag and sleep - or have a few pints at the bar.

Yeah the time is right, it's a long trip indeed.

Other option is to go through England - Bahn.de will show you all the schedules from Dublin --> Holyhead --> Crewe --> London --> France. Very soon after Calais you are at Dunkirk.

Might it be quicker and cheaper to just fly in somewhere around Normandy there and then start the interrailing trip? Maybe having the overnight on the boat is a good thing as you will get used to it once on the trains!
