This is purely out of interest, but I hope you can let me know the full process involved in the new scanned dockets.

Whenever I'm lucky enough to get a payout, the guy/girl simply scans the barcode, and can tell how much is owed. Has someone already added up how much is owed out? What happends when the docket is scanned initially - what info is recorded?

Also, (I never had the balls to ask the staff in the local bookie, but was tempted when I met one out in a pub one day)....
The old pull apart dockets.... Could one not put it through the machine blank to time it, then simply write the winning horse out later?

I find it all interesting, and would like to know how it works.

    Cheers.

There is a copy of the slip taken and saved on the pc, then the cashier has to translate ii, so if you have no1 leopardstown 2.20, he has to search for the meeting, then the time, then the selection, this is usually done quite fast so when you go back with your winning docket, the computer knows whats due, the computer works that out automaticly....

Cameras in the tills used to take a pic or each docket (as long as there was film in the camera  )

Rag2gar has the gist of it. I can only speak for powers, i think boyles have the same system aswell. The bet is put through a scanner, slip is scanned. Then stake is entered. Then the scanned image is printed out. Now that slip is waiting to be translated. All the PC are networked to Tallaght, and every day the racing and sports markets are sent out. So if we use r2r's example no.1 leopardstown 2:20, all id have to do is type in 220 and any race going off at 220 comes up in a drop down menu, then i select the Leop 2:20 and then the runners come up i press down to highlight "1" press enter, then select the stake and it's in the system (any who works in betting shops will know quicker methods!!). When the result comes in, someone in HQ settles the market and sends out the result to all the shops. So i scan the winning bet, it then comes up "amount to be paid: €XXXX.XX", still have to give it a once over just in case!! (like the time a lad done a placepot and the computer was paying him the jackpot dividend.) then press the payout in full button and a receipt comes out. I staple this to your bet, then give you your money.

That is part of the reason why the machines were invented, to speed things up and stop fraud. When the bet is scanned, the barcode contains some useful info. The date, the shop, the day of the year, and more importantly who took it in, though some people are so thick, with the things they have done.

Basically you could put one through blank, but that is all it can ever be, a blank bet, you couldnt write something on after at all and if you did the computer's image will be blank. Another reason is usually when a bet goes through it goes to the nearest available till for translation, usually your colleague's! So s/he would be like whats this blank bet. The closest you could get is a bet translated wrong, but you would need someone behind the counter in on it with you. You would of course be caught somewhere down the line, and with this technology it wouldnt be too far down that line.
