Advice On Supplements

I started out in the gym about three months ago. Going three or four times a week and doing weights at home. I'm getting rid of the weight I wanted to (I'm slightly overweight) but am still a bit overweight.

However, I'm hoping to build myself up a bit. Should I start on protein pills or whey supplement now or should I wait until I've lost the res of the weight I want to or turned it into muscle?

Whey is always a good source of protein if you're lifting weights. However don't be fooled, whey will not build you up. It will help along the way, there are many factors to consider for building muscle. Your over all Diet and training routine are first and foremost, your form and how you lift are another.

Protein supplements and indeed supplements of any kind are the last thing you should worry about. Try and get most of your nutrients(protein, fat and carbohydrates) from natural, whole foods. But as john pointed out there are many factors to gaining muscle. Stick with it bro, you'll be a giant yet. :D

Feel free to post your diet/training schedule etc. up here, and the old farts can swap tips and advice with you. Or you could ask the staff at your local gym, though based on recent conversations I've had with trainers in my gym, you'll probably be better off here :)

No harm taking it now, read up about it. It is not "protein pills", it is not some sort of drug, it is simply a food, a by product of cheese making. Just like butter is refined fat from cows, the powder is refined protein from cows.

Eating proteins can trigger muscle formation and use up calories in doing so, so lead to fat loss.

Whey is the best protein there is,
    1 - Whey
    2 - Milk
    3 - Eggs.

Try taking whey within 5 minutes when you finish your workout, and if you want serious gains, Take caesin before going to bed.. Caesin takes roughly 8 hours to break down, so all the night your body is constantly getting protein and staying in an anabolic state!

    Skies

If you take wehy with milk before you go to bed skies it gives the casein effect and slows uptake down. Water after your workout to get it quickly into your system.

What exactly constitutes your idea of "best protein"? If your thinking is best = most bioavailable, then yes whey is best, then eggs, then milk. Although for whole food sources, eggs cannot be beaten (not literally of course ;) ) If best = most rapidly absorbed post-workout for rapid provision of protein to cells then again, whey is up the top. If you're looking for best = slowly absorbed over a long time frame thereby avoiding catabolism in the absence of alternative protein ingestion (i.e. at night) then milk is up top due to its high level of casein protein.

ah that's all part of my cunning plan... if I use big words and long enough sentences I'll confuse people beyond the point of questionning me ;)

OPr you could combine an egg protein,a whey protein and a casein protein for the best all-round amino acid profile combined with sustained, long term digestion.

So, if I'm correct here, I should be working out and then taking whey with MIlk before I go to bed? Am I correct.

Will that help me change the far to muscle easier?

May mate takes Tony Quinn proten pills. Are they any good?

You can take magic beans if you like but nothing is going to change fat to muscle. To lose fat you need to diet in such a way that you burn more calories than you ingets. To grow muscle you need to excercise with weights whilst ingesting enough calories for the muscle building process. To build muscle and lose weight you'll need to cut out junk from your diet, excercise both cardio and weights and most importantly stick with it.Tony Quinn products arent worth a fiddler's f uck,if you're going to supplement, take a quality product(read the stickies above!).

    Just two questions:

    1. Should I be taking a day off between gym session to allow my muscles to recover? Several people have told me that I'll bulk up easier that way.

    2. Where can I buy the type of whey I need? I'm in the Blanch area. Is there anywhere online either?

Yes. Gnerally you need to allow a few days in between workouts to recover sufficiently.
Hopefully you're doing a full body routine, in which case monday, wednesday, friday would be okay (as an example).

If you're doing a typical split e.g legs one day, chest the next etc then it would be ok to go to the gym 2days in a row but in general space it out as best you can.

As for the whey, Jon who posts here I think has a free delivery service so give him a shout.

List your current diet and training program please (weights exercises reps days etc)

Supplements dont mean anything if the above are incorrect

Going about three days a week:

Spend ten minutes on the cross trainer, followed by various weight machines, lifting anything from 45 to 75kg. Followed by the treadmill for ten minutes, a few more of the weights and then ten minutes on the bike.

The weights are all the usual machines for your shoulders and upper body.

I also do reps of 25 kg weights and a pair of 5kg dumbells at home.

    Diet consists of:

Breakfast : Two bits of brown bread and some orange juice/milk.

Mid morning snack: Two bits of brown toast and cranberry juice/milk. Also a boiled egg.

Lunch: Usually a panini with some chicken and ham or some rice or pasta.

Dinner: Tends to be fish and pasta or rice and chicken or two beef burgers in burger buns.

I also take stuff like Yakult and Kombucha to try and help speed up my metabolism.

Ok, first thing you need to do is get someone to help you with your training plan. The one you have now is a bit of a mess. It seems as though you just wander into the gym and pick up some weights without taking note of how heavy they are, and just plugging away until you get a bit tired. That's how it seems man. and they're in every Gym. Get someone to show you a workout, to show you good form and to help you decide what weight to use. And then try to work up from there, (never find yourself in the position where you're lifting less than the week before - unless doing drop sets which, unless you know what you're at, is just cheating, or lifting too heavy to start with). You probably won't get anywhere for a very long time without this help.
As for the diet - I would advise you to lose the Brown Bread for Breakfast and start on Porridge - there is no equal to porridge as a breakfast. Then I would swap the Brown bread for Wholegrain bread (maybe it is WG bread, that you are eating, but because you didn't say that, if it is, it's pure fluke) But I would have this at lunch, instead of the Panini, as a sandwich with healthy fillings (of course). Try and get Wholegrain rice & Pasta too.
Get more protein. You can do this by taking protein supplements, or by eating protein rich foods. As a snack you'll probably find the shakes easier. (Remember, everyone will tell you it's better to get your protein naturally, but these people are nearly ALL taking supplements). Ditch the burgers, they are fattening, end of.
Juice is highly calorific for what you get from it. Stick to water or Milk, or tea. I drink Sugar Free Red bull before a workout - not ideal but I feel it gives me an edge.
In summary, the diet isn't great but wouldn't be the worst, you could fix it without feeling any withdrawals. But you workout ... I could spend a week trying to think of something good to say about your workout. Best of luck man!;)

Oh and Yakult and Kombucha don't do anything for your metabolism - certainly nothing significant. Any positive change they make they have will be counteracted by the calories in them.

Big time need to read the stickys as diet needs major overhaul and your program is a mess with no structure what so ever

Everyone that makes progress has a structured program with listed reps, exercises, weights sets etc

What age are you and height and weight

    Lads,

I'm not trying to look like a body builder here. I just want to tone up and bulk up a bit.

I'm just under 6 foot (about five foot ten), age 23 and I'd say I weight 13 stone or just over.

It takes years of savage training and torturous diet to become a Bodybuilder. On current form I think your safe. The advice you've been given will help you drop body fat and gain lean muscle ("tone up and bulk up"). If you don't want to do it, it won't bother me in the slightest, but that's what you have to do. Take it or leave it.

Okay lads, I've spoken to a mate who does alot of weights and he is going to help me with a regime.

Jon on here has been very helpful too. I'm going onto Supercuts tabs to help aid some fat loss and going onto Nutirition X Pro X Whey. Just wondering:

When should I take it? Just after training or before I go to bed or when?

And how much should I be taking?

Thanks for your help so far.

I'm dopping the alcohol for the next month too.
